Opening a 'strip club'

Hey folks,
I've just recently closed down my car wash thanks to hauliers deciding to lift up our portable storage and wrecking the equipment (another post on insurance claims to come soon!) and the councils general "oh you're making money - give us 80% on rates/drainage/water charges!"

Anyway... I've been pondering with the idea of opening a strip club for some time and I'm wondering if anyone on here has any experience? I'm not sure what licenses I need (alcohol being the obvious one but I assume theres some sort of license similar to the adult gaming license needed by bookies/arcades?)

I forsee some objections, but nothing that can't be overcome. I'm going to go and see the council as soon as the insurance pay out for my car wash, but I'm just looking to get some information - so let the information flow :)

Steve

If i had access to sizeable funds i think i would contemplate opening a strip club. The money they make is quite an exciting figure.

You need all sorts of insurances, you even need a special type of insurance so the "women" can remove their pants.

* so i have been told :redface::D

But the main issue with a strip club would be finding an area that is not already dominated by a club. Which im sure is easier said than done.

The insurances would be an interesting one to get into - I know for a fact that one strip club company in Scotland hires all their dancers as self-employed and has them sign a weiver for liability in the case of sexual assault etc. Obviously they'll still need employers liability, public liability and all that - but the taking the pants off insurance would be new to my knowledge!!

I'm more concerned with the council than anything else at this stage to be honest - I've had LOTS of bother with them over my last business and they seem to be a law unto themselves regarding rates and basically wanting to eat your profits in whatever way they can- so I want to make sure that I've got planning on my planning permission so to speak! I had the noise inspectors, planning, SEPA and all their cousins and brothers and whoeverbloodyelse they wanted to send up to my carwash all wanting something changed and a cut for it.

There is one strip club in the county and it's about twelve miles from where I am proposing the club. I assume they'll allow it one way or another because there's already one operating in the region.

As for the figures - I'm not so sure it'll be as profitable as people may think. Lap dancers make strong money and the way I see it, you need to have the place busy to keep the (good) dancers at the club. Saying that, with a reasonable entry fee and good profits from the bar - as well as a cut from the dancers - of course there is money to be made.

I appreciate not everyone is going to want to share their experiences about lap dancing clubs on a public forum - but if you have the time - please PM me with thoughts on approach on things like:

1. Pay the dancer or pay at the bar - these are the two approaches I've found at most strippers. You either pay the girl or you pay the bar and get a 'coin' or whatever. Which do you prefer?

2. Approach the girl or have the girl approach you - some people find the 'hard sell' annoying (myself included) and would rather tell the dancer if they want a dance - but obviously other people are less confident and prefer the pretence of the stripper coming on to you...

3. Prices - £10 to get in and £6 for a beer and £15 for a 3min dance... Or the cheaper approach? Regulars vs. One-offs? Where I'm proposing the club be situated is in an area where there's unlikely to be much of a 'holiday' crowd, more like regular old men, young guys and wannabe gangsters all at once... So I'm thinking the reasonable pricing strategy might go a long way.

4. Anything else - if something popped into your head while reading this - send me the qualitative info ;)

I'm just knocking ideas around at the moment for everything, but I think it's worth a trip down to Castle Grayskull... I mean Fife House... For an informal chat on the rules and regulations.

At our local lap dancing club, the girls pay the owner for there slot /time period. The last I heard was £80.00 per slot, but business has taken a dip due to credit squeeze! so the rate may have dropped. The place is totally grotty outside and worse inside... They charge £6.00 entrance and drinks are £6.00 each. A dance is £30.00 the last time i went! he he. The guys dragged me in last Christmas, what a laugh most of the girlies were after me as none of the men were interested in a dance at the time, a three some would have been more lucrative! The owner who I know indirectly is doing very well and has been open for at least 10 years or so. Sounds to me a good business venture. Best of luck!

it's been a while since i was last in a strip club (student days) but it was £15.00 for a 10 min dance and £30 each for 2 girls and a group dance.

i suppose it depends on the crowd you can pull in but there is not a chance i would pay £6 for a beer and £15.00 for a 3 min dance. i'm not saying that you wouldnt be able to charge this as no doubt there are guys who would pay this and be happy to pay it.

i know a girl is a stripper in scotland and made a crazy amount of money. she had one punter who used to travel up every 2 weeks and give her £200.00 to sit and talk to him for an hour. she apparently danced every now and again for him, the guy obviously had money to burn

no! i wouldn't do it.

all strip joints will soon come under a sex establishment license, rather than just the current premise license which allows you to sell alcohol/be open. this means that you will have to renew every year, where the council could shut you down for a lot of reasons quite simply...

first step would be to speak to your councils licensing department! they may tell you outright that it would be rejected for being too close to a school/residential area/other establishments...

We had girls in bikinis once at the car wash... My girlfriend is a professional dancer (for the likes of Rhianna, Clubland shows, VH1, etc. - not a stripper!) and a few girls from the agency she was with were up for it. Made a fortune and was a good laugh.

Anyway... There's no danger that kind of premium pricing would last long around here. Would be more like £5/6 to get in (£10 absolute tops) and £3.50 a pint (£4 absolute tops)... As for dances, the other club in Fife is £10/3mins, £20/6mins, £100/one hour sit down. Most in Edinburgh are about the same. A similar strategy in terms of pricing would be likely.

James - is that a fact about the sex establishment license? That could be interesting.

The place I'm proposing is right next to a shopping centre - however, it's far from the only place available. Kirkcaldy could be more realistic as I'm more confident of obtaining a late license down there and there's a larger population too... I'm confident I could find a venue that would satisfy the councils criteria. The strippers in Dunfermline (nearest) is right next to the main shopping centre and bus station!

Hi stevon

Just to confirm what James mentioned - Strip clubs are coming under the sex establishment license rules so you would need to apply and pay the many thousands in order to get the license.
If you need anymore info then check out the ETO website (erotic trade only) which has recently covered this topic.

Allan.

plus, are you in scotland?

all of their rules around alcohol are stricter too.. a guy i did my personal license course with was doing his scottish license (he actually owned a chain of strip clubs, and was opening a strip club in scotland), said it was going to be the most restrictive and most expensive to set up....

Time for this idea has come and gone. Those who have them are cutting prices, entry fees are fading fast and promotions galore.

Age old issue of supply of decent talent but wanting girls who are not hookers to do it and pay the establishment is hard to come by and I guess many are dragged into the sale of sex at some point. The owners I know accept this and have seen the changes over the last couple of decades.
