Magento 1.9 categories tree collapsed by default - is this correct?

Should the Magento 1.9 categories tree be collapsed by default, even when a product appears in the child category?

I'm currently using Magento 1.4 but am upgrading to 1.9. In 1.4, when a product is in a sub-category, the tree is expanded to show the child category that is checked.

On my dev site, the Magento 1.9 website shows the category tree collapsed. Which seems illogical to me, as you need to click on every possible '+' to see which subcategory the product is in.

Is this wrong? Has it been installed incorrectly? Or, is there some clever reason for it being collapsed that I'm missing??

Not entirely sure I follow exactly what you're referring to but I assume you are talking about the sub categories at the top of the left hand side layered navigation?

By default, this will display sub categories of the current category only if they contain products.

These filters aren't even collapsible anyway in Magento 1.9 770px + width. Are you referring to the view on mobiles? You may have interfering javascript or custom attributes with custom handling or a 3rd party integration/extension that is overriding the default layered navigation.

Providing a link to where you see the issue would allow us to help further.

Sorry, if I wasn't very clear. I meant the product categories tree for each product (that you access via the admin). For example, when I add a new product, I often duplicate an existing one that's similar. I then check that it's in the appropriate product categories. If it's expanded (which it is in 1.4), it's a quick scan and update. If the checked boxes are hidden away collapsed (as it is on my dev site on 1.9), I will need to click to expand across lots of categories to check it's correct, which is time-consuming and laborious.
