Debt Recovery Agencies - Any Experiences using their services

New to the forum, but hoping I can get some 1st hand advice.
As a victim of various bad debts in the past 18 months, I'm intrigued as to whether anyone out there has any experiences, good or bad, concerning the use of Debt Recovery organisations.
In our particular situation we'd be looking to try and recover funds from companies who have gone into liquidation as opposed to just late payers.
Advice so far has been to avoid, but there seems to be so many of these particular organisations out there, they must have some success.
All comments welcome.
Do not pay any upfront fees for this type of work, you will be wasting your money! There is some options as others have pointed out to you but could be expensive to explore, so will depend on the amount outstanding. Let me know if you need any further advice.

Hi, i need some advice pronto please. im a social worker who took poor advice and signed up as a managed service company back in 07 till feb 10 after being told that i would be Ltd Co. The HMRC have spent pretty much most of last year investigating me along with over 1000 other workers. this afternoon i recieved word from the HMRC that they have now decided that i was a Managed Service Provider and that they have calculated i will owe them approx £22,000. they need me to file some expenses which may bring the figure down but i think this wont alter the total that much.

my question is this. what is the process from here on? i dont have £22,000 in anyway shape or form so will they take my house? what options do i have, if any? do they do payment plans for this amount? is there any risk that i might also be litigated?

i have been reading information in respect of 'mutual obligations' and was wondering if this would apply to me as i have been with my current contract which has been rolled over on a year by year basis. would this assist my position with their investigations. furthermore, are there any case studies which show that the Managed Service Company Provider i used could possibly be liable for the outstanding monies as i had no idea what was going on and believed that i was Ltd Co.

any advice greatly appreciated as i need to apply to HMRC by the 28.02.11 and cant afford an accountant or legal advice on this matter.
