Top 5 Christmas Money Saving Tips
Perhaps it is because we did not really have a Christmas last year, but I have started my Christmas countdown already . Christmas can be a difficult time for some people, it can be hard to find the money to facilitate your Christmas dreams. We're sharing our top 5 tips to alleviate some of the strain this Christmas as voted by members of the only UK Gift Forum!
Make a list!
Retailers rely on your impulse spending, pouring many thousands into clever sales and marketing schemes. Doing things old fashioned really pays off around Christmas time. Work out which essentials and presents that you need to purchase. Make a list, check it twice and stick to it!
Set up a Christmas cupboard!
Make a list of your Christmas essentials early in the year. When you see your items discounted throughout the year, grab them and stick them in the cupboard for when December rolls around. This can save you from paying the seasonal premiums and by spreading the cost across the year, you can minimise the chance of missing out on any of the essentials.
Agree to skip gifts this Christmas!
There seems to be an ever-expanding list of people who you are obliged to buy Christmas gifts for, whether that be colleagues, friends or extended family. Christmas doesn't have to be a retail festival, a mutual agreement to skip on gifts this Christmas can help to ease the pressure. This money saved can be reinvested into other gifts, Christmas food or any other of the Christmas essentials.
Be aware of the last online order dates!
Recently there has been a huge surge in online shopping, owing to the Coronavirus pandemic and increasingly intricate digital infrastructure. Spending money online has never been easier. However, saving money can be slightly more difficult. Online retailers quietly increase their delivery charges leading up to Christmas. There is money to be saved by ordering well in advance. Make sure you find the last Christmas delivery date for the retailer you intend to buy from, to make sure you get your items in time. If you leave it too late, getting your items delivered before the big day carries a hefty premium which can stretch your finances more than necessary. If Christmas goods are late, you can only complain if you can prove it was for pre-Christmas delivery. Then it's a breach of contract, and you've a right to a refund.
Resell unused Christmas gifts!
Have you got gifts lying around, unopened and unused from last Christmas? A great way to boost the Christmas fund is to sell these gifts on. The demand for gifts around Christmas time on online marketplaces like eBay and Facebook is huge and you can get yourself a fair chunk of cash to help support the Christmas expenses. Selling on online marketplaces can be a bit of a hassle and sometimes a lengthy process. If you need speed and efficiency at the expense of maximum sale price, there are sites that will offer you a price and allow you to post the goods for free.
A sensible, year-long budgeting strategy and following some simple tricks to avoid consumer traps can allow you to more easily bear the financial brunt of Christmas, and maybe even shop the January sales!
