  • Your Website May Be Causing You To Lose Out On Customers Aug 20, 2015

While in Egypt I noticed a trait that many of them have not wanting to appear that they didn’t know. If I asked for directions I would always get an answer. Sometime you hope that the information was correct. My friend wasn’t so fortunate. He was in Cairo and wanted to get to October 8th (its an area there). He asked some locals for directions they said Ala Tool which mean straight on. He kept driving and asked another local for directions they told him the same thing. This happened several times and he ended up in another city and no where near his destination.

There’s a lot of information on the web about ranking in Google. I’m cutting away the fluff and giving the nitty gritty essentials. Web designers are useful for one thing creating great looking websites not websites that make you money. You might hear this web designer stuff several times before the end of the post. If you want a step by step follow this guide. Based upon your feedback I’ll help you out further and create how to posts and videos for each section, JUST ASK.

    Telling Google Your Target Keywords

Do you know what keywords your targeting? What are the most lucrative keywords your ideal customer is using to find you? If you don’t know I suggest you find out before continuing (I’ll be writing about this too).

This guide presumes you have your keywords and will show you the best places to utilise them. In order to better place yourself to get FREE leads from Google. Only aim to target on one page 1-2 main keyword the rest can be LSI (What Google deems as related keywords) scattered around.

    Starting from the top

Your Title tag MOST IMPORTANT should contain your main keyword and ideally be front loaded. If it isn’t because you didn’t create your website FIRE your web designer(and use me instead).

This is a pet peeve of mine. Local businesses IF you want to make money and get business from the internet then go to an SEO agency from the start and not a web design agency. SEO agencies are there to get your site to where your money is whereas a web design firm creates a great looking website. If a great looking website that doesn’t get results or just having a website because its the done thing then reading this won’t help unless you implement the advice. RANT OVER. (PS. From viewing the forum the guys here know their stuff. I’m talking about many of those that don’t frequent the forum.)

A friendly Url is advised. And ideally be descriptive.!service?/?main-keyword! No special characters Does this describe the page?

The last example is descriptive and give a clear indication of what the page is about the 1st example goes against Google advice of best practice. And from me to you its best to do what they say.

    Meta Description

This is Good for telling people what to expect if they click on your listing be creative and encourage them to click look to what the advertisers are using for inspiration. Most times they know what they are doing as they don’t want to throw their marketing money down the drain.

    Heading Tags

Break the page up into sections and essential describes that part of the page. To keep things simple have only ONE H1 tag thats more than likely going to be your title in Wordpress (it does this automatically in Wordpress, so use Wordpress as a pro tip).

<h1>Plumber London: We Love serving you<h1>

Loren Ipsum Plumbing is the system of pipes, drains, fittings, valves, and fixtures installed for the distribution of potable water for drinking, heating and washing, and waterborne waste removal. "Plumbing" also refers to the skilled trade which installs and maintains it lorem Ipsom.

    <h2>Emergency Plumbing services<h2>

    Keywords in text

People talk about keyword density (if you don’t know what this means, good) just write naturally . You’ll want to ensure you get your LSIs sprinkled in the text and keyword stuffing(repeating the keywords over and over) has been obsolete since 2012. Where can you find LSIs? Google autocomplete and Google related searches (at the bottom of the page).

Use keyword rich anchor text when interlinking. Don’t repeat the same terms vary up your link patterns.

    Tell Google your location

Name, address and phone number (NAP) This should be in your footer ideally and correctly marked up with schema to tell Google exactly where you are in terms that is easy to digest. If schema sounds foreign check out for more info. To be totally honest wait for my next post on schema as I didn’t learn schema from there as it’s confusing as hell. Let me help you out in the mean time go to this link type in your business details and it will create the special code that you can paste in. An even easier method is further down the post.

With your NAP data consistency is key from your website to Google+ to your directory listings. Consistency is king enables Google to tie everything together.

Let your customers know(and Google) where you are by embedding your map location on your site. Another big thing for customers and Google are reviews. I remember looking for an RC car for my kids on Amazon. Knowing how rough my boys are I read the reviews from previous owners I read how robust this particular toy was and thought perfect and bought it. The same goes for when customers are using Google to find local businesses they look for reviews. Make it easy for them to find all the info they need on your site.

If they have to go looking elsewhere e.g or where there are other providers be sure they’ll check them out too at the same time. Why not aggregate your reviews from these sites and embed them on your site. Other places you can get reviews is via Facebook. Use a service like Yext to complete your directory submission ensuring NAP consistency. Sometimes good on page and correct citations alone will work wonders for your local listings.

One place Local businesses and tradesmen in particular fail to focus on is Google+ reviews Google gives more weight to their own properties, utilise them. Do you know how to give a businesses a Google+ review? If you don’t I’m pretty sure your customers won’t either.

Here’s my review sheet I give to clients via pdf or print. These are very powerful in generating reviews easily and quickly without explanation.

These reviews build trust with your potential customers and in turn Google

Give Customers a way to interact with your business

Video - create a short video of your business and embed it on your site (I love autoplay, force them to watch your great work)

Images - Meet the team (show you have a face), Showcase your work. Two things with images name them something useful for the search engine to read e.g. New-kitchen-fitted not DSC95758594 and PRO TIP Geo tag your images to say where they were taken.

Social Media - Have easy access to your social media profiles. Ensure you have the basic ones (Facebook, twitter, Youtube and Google+ (here I am referring to Google My Business) if you want to go all out get Digg, Delicious, Newsvine there are others. To keep thing more manageable use Hootsuite it helps you to manage all your social profiles in one place sort of like a set and forget solution at least if you set it up for a while

Blog - blogging gets you more customers fact. You create authority (Google loves authority) and trust and in turn people buy from you. By knowing what the concerns are of the people that by from you you are then able to create content according their needs (You’ll be seen as a hero too). Keeping things simple syndicate your content to your social profiles. 70% consumers learn about a company through content rather than ads - Tech client

Major Search engine Submission and management.

Add your website to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools.

You’ll have to verify the site is yours ensure you do it for both versions of your site the www. And non www. Then choose which one you prefer Google to list in the results.

Both Google and Bing are kind enough for you to highlight your business information. I mentioned schema before this is the easy section to go to the data highlighter section in Google Webmaster tools and highlight the relevant information. By doing this onsite you’re covered for both by doing this via the data highlighter you need use both data highlighters to give your info to each search engine.

One important factor you need to consider is what Google sees you relevant for check the content keywords tab to see which keywords Google sees you most relevant for.

Why not get a site audit and see what you need to improve in an instant. This is the link to the original blog post. It has a bit of extra information 50+ UK directory sites you can submit to to help your local business.
