To submit your website to search engines? There are some companies that do this for free but are they effective?

Is it better to manually do it yourself even if it's more time consuming?

It is fairly straight forward so you can complete this task yourself.

You only need to set up a Google Webmaster account.

Obviously you can submit to Bing and Yahoo as well.

Any other search engines I wouldn't bother with.

Google webmaster tools allows you to submit your URL. However, getting even one inbound link will trigger the same searches, as the search engine bots are always looking for new pages.

Webmaster tools has other useful things as well, though, so well worth setting it up.
