Last week I phoned and e-mailed 3 local PR businesses saying that I would be interested in their services. NOT 1 HAS GOT BACK! I am indeed "angry from Manchester". I blame it all on Starbucks, these marketing types just want to sit in there shouting "its all about media synergy tarquin" down their mobile phones at each other. Grrr

I second Robs recomendation and i'm not suprised at what happens. I get the feeling that a lot of martketing/pr companies expect you to go to them with a big wad of cash before they will take notice of you.

Try Andy I think he will sort you out no problem.

I don't think it's just PR people. I can say the same for plumbers, plasterers etc who even come round to give a quote and then vanish from the face of the Earth.

I think that's why business people who bother to follow often get the business, because they realise that follow up is the business.

'What is wrong with PR people?' I don't think there's enough bandwidth available to do that justice.

Manchester hypnosis doesn't look like a £3000-a-month fee earner. They'll wait for four or five calls to see if you're serious.

I usually only need two calls myself!

Your best route is a PR consultant. There are at least five or six who post on the website - so take your pick. They (we?) all seem pretty competent.

And yes .. Andy is the best! But I've PM'd you nonetheless.

I tend to agree that it isn't just marketing firms but business in general in the UK. Now don't get me wrong there are some good companies out there who are probably making good profits as well just because of their service.

The problem is most businesses only care about one thing - profits through sales and some forget if you look after your customer the chances are they wil buy from you again.

There is a lesson to be learned from your experience vor everyone - treat your customers like they are important to you and they will come back for more and hopefully spread the word about your great service!

Customer service is everything. If budgets are your target then tell your clients or prospective clients about it and don't ever prejudge them. I have been talking today to someone who sells baby gifts on here who is definately going places :) Modest budgets are common with start ups but some of them with the right sort of help turn into the Virgins, Tescos, etc of tomorrow. Beware of the short sighted!

It's also about who you go to in the first place. PR firms are looking cherry-pick clients with big budgets (and preferably big issues that are easy to PR!).

Those of us who work as consultants (i.e. one-man/woman operations) are probably more suitable for the small start-up because we understand that you might need piecemeal work at affordable rates - and we're in a position to do it because we don't have the overheads.

[I'm not posting my link yet because I haven't been active on these forums since I registered, so I don't think I've earned the advertising, and there are plenty of people on here who appear to be extemely good.]

The majority of PR companies are staffed by people who have taken the educational-PR route, learning their trade in college or university.
Nothing wrong with that.
There are plenty of PR consultancies offering services and staffed by people like myself - a former journalist.
We appreciate that even getting back to say "not interested" is important.
I hope you do not tar everyone with the same brush.
I write to people offering our services and say, "If you don't talk to us, you won't know what we can do for you."
If I believe this, then I have to respond to all calls.
Hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. One of the PR people I contacted still hasn't come back to me (and it was a UKBF member who is always being praised in these forums!).

Persoanlly, I always get back to people, even when they clearly have too small a budget or when we have too much work on - it's just common courtesy.

You'd be amazed how often we start work on a web development project for a client (which by the time we've had all the necessary discussions is often a couple of weeks after their initial enquiry) and they mention that out of the ten companies they contacted for quotes, only us and one other company even responded. Suits me though!

We are a small agency consisting of three former journalists and manage accounts from start-up one-man-bands to national companies, charities and sports organisations.

Feel free to contact me once my post count is up and the minimum I will do is offer advice, even if i feel that you would be better served by somone local to you who may already have good relationships with local media.

Hi there Sly1,

I'm one of the PR people who post on the forums. If you contacted me can you let me know how you made contact - if I had received anything from you I would have at least replied, even if it was to say sorry, can't help at the mo, but I don't recall receiving anything from you. Then again, you may not have tried to contact me ...

Lindsey.
