What is the best way to charge for PPC work?

Is it % of spend?
Is it fixed hourly rate?
Is it a magic variation of the two?

Is there a way to price PPC services that are fair in the mind of both provider and client, or do you charge what you want and ignore ethics and morals?

Please give some advice, as this issue has me climbing up the wall.

Thanks in advance, B.

I favour % of spend, However, the majority of the work in managing PPC campaigns is in the first few months. After that (assuming you have built a good campaign), you will not need to be doing as much to the campaign. This can lead to clients questionning why they are still paying x amount. making sure you manage them well from the beginning is obviously important but even then some people do not understand.

If I was paying someone per hour though, I would want to know exactly what they did each hour I have paid them for.

So basically, I don't know the answer but do think that % is slightly easier to manage

I also would not aim to lower the overall spend on a campaign. I would look to decrease CPC but want the client to invest more in the campaign because of the returns they are getting.

Hey Baz,

When we used a company, they charged us a fixed monthly fee plus a small % on spend.

Not heard of companies just charging a % though.

From experience, clients would prefer the % only spend, but suggest doing a flat monthly retainer for daily tweaks and a small %.

You can always do a 3 month trial without the % just to get the interest.

What do you consider a appropriate monthly fee and what size percentage?

Hi Baz,

I think we paid about £250 and 5%.

As long as the client knows it is a case of taking your time on it and making small changes (as opposed to getting it up and running over night) over a few weeks/months.

If you don't mind me asking, can you remember who that was with? :)
