The reason it might not work in Opera is I don't have the flash plugin for it, and thats done on purpose. I don't like wasting my bandwidth on poinltess animations. I just want the information as quickly as possible.

However all I get in Opera is a blank screen, no text no nothing just a GIF border.

I would also be interested to find out what the search engine rankings are yours and your clients sites.

I do feel sorry for these poor guys (and gals) that come along and say "Hi, I'm a web developer/designer, etc", but have an in adequate site themselves - and then they get taken to bits by all the other developers here!

I must say though that a response of "oh well, that's life" to the site not working in Opera is a bit worrying.

Well nobody is perfect, but some people here seemed to have bought FrontPage in 1999, learn't a bit of basic flash then call them selves web developers without any apparent understanding of usability engineering. The back button dosn't work on that site for example.

I actually feel very mean pointing these things out but hopefully its all constructive.

Can see where Joydivision is coming from.

I wish James the best of luck but if the site is 'inadequate' then a few pointers can only help - if done tactfully. I think Joydivisions answer was.

The only worry for me (apart from the Opera comment) on the site was the constant amount of hidden text. White colour text on white colour background. All designers and SEO's know the fatalities of that one - and how his future clients could suffer greatly.

By pointing out these 'inadequacies' can help the designer improve his own services?

Agreed, I don't think there is anything wrong with what you're all saying, I strongly agree with all of it.

I just can't help feeling sorry for them - they think "ooh, potential customers" but don't realise the snake pit they are getting in to if they're not up to scratch.

I've seen good designers turn up here and they always get the warm welome they deserve. The comments are all contructive, I just hope they're taken that way and that James takes it on board and exploits this very good opportunity to improve what he does without getting defensive or disheartened.

He's come looking for potential custom, but got something a lot better; objective opinions and contructive criticism from professional people.

A good book might be:-

Thatcher, J. (2002), Constructing Accessible Web Sites, Glasshaus, Birmingham, U.K.

It gets you thinking in that frame of mind to make better web sites as it dicussing the issues of the actual foundations of the site.

I have found some very useful ideas in there.

Everyone has to start somewhere :D

Very true but he is marketing himself as a web professional...
That's the big mistake. It could take years to recover from reputation destroyed by doing that...

Nothing that a new phone number and trading company cannot change. I have sadly seen that done so many times.
