    Hi all

Just thought I'd show you this

It's something I've been keeping an eye on for a while

The next generation of e-commerce websites are going to look/feel and behave much more like native apps. The technical term is PWA - progressive web apps. In a nutshell its just sometnign that feels much more like an app than a brochure

There's a few competing technologies but the one I'm most interested in is this one:

Is looking, feeling and behaving like native apps something to be desired?
And what is a native app? Made in Scotland perhaps? Or sold by a UK business?

If you're accustomed to a slick user experience, you know when you're using a native app vs something a bit funky.

The problem with native apps is you now have to maintain and update 2 sets of source code, one for iOS and one for Android and then your website on top of that.

Everyone thinks they need an app, when they don't.

Building a PWA is the common sense solution.

It's a just like having a website, that you can SEO, allow users to "install" it by simply saving it to their home screen, easily share it with others, always up to date, works offline, send push notifications etc.

You're no longer at the mercy of the App Store.

    Agree with @billybob99

It's the next logical step after everyone made their sites responsive to mobile layouts. I think a lot of sites now are getting majority mobile traffic and this approach makes the mobile experience as good as possible.

The issue is that whilst PWA has been agreed upon as the strategy, it has yet to gain real popularity and there is not a dominating open source option. I think that will change in the next few years.

From a user perspective, it means something that might take a second or two to load, but once it has loaded, everything feels fast and fluent. You can go through a tunnel on the train and continue adding things to your basket.

    This is worth a look:

Oh yeah - Magento store owners have the very attractive option of implementing VueStorefront as an alternative front end which opens up a whole world of possibilities!

So an agreed strategy that's not followed so its still not popular?
    What is popular?

Did you notice how long it took for everyone to go responsive?

This looks very interesting! I've been working with a number of React apps that use WordPress as a headless CMS. I very much like the idea of a WooCommerce backend with a SPA frontend. I'd be curious to know what the leading React based equivalent is; looks like I have some research ahead of me.
