Unkown Self Assessment record on HMRC online account

I was checking my HMRC online account for my PAYE tax code and noticed it stated “you are registered for self assessment to use your self assessment you will need to request access” but although I have been researching to start my online e-commerce store I have not registered for self assessment. Is this on my HMRC account by default or has HMRC added it? I have a full time paid job. My employer does not know my plans. Mystified why it’s there. If anyone can help advise me if this is standard practice? I have registered with potential suppliers for my products could it be that activity?

No HMRC wouldn't register you. Have you spoken with an accountant who may have registered you?

Unless as above in my experience HMRC have always written to me direct.

Thanks everyone I will give them a call. I have not started trading so do not think I have anything to worry about as they have never wrote to me either. But best to be ahead of the game. Thanks

I found out from HMRC that it was a dormant self assessment account from 1999 so that’s solved that. Thanks for the replies
