Sorry but confusion reigns supreme and i cant figure that out. What would a woo commerce category be?

I did change most of the categories but that was before i realised they had some importance other than just product grouping.

Not really sure what i am checking TBH, sorry.

https://ddmetalproducts.co.uk/products/themed-dogs/ is just a stock category and has no page

Your products are in woocommerce categories

Click on any product and you can see the category under the price

For instance this product https://ddmetalproducts.co.uk/product/square-fire-pit/ is in this category https://ddmetalproducts.co.uk/products/fire-pits/

The thing, is you have created a separate category for fire pits as well - https://ddmetalproducts.co.uk/all-fire-pits/

The links from the individual products point to the lower quality version of the category.

Where this happens you want to redirect the lower quality version to the higher
    i.e.
    products/fire-pits/ to all-fire-pits/

    Ok, getting there...

So i need to redirect whatever happens when you click on the "category" link to a more relevant page?

TBH I had never clicked on one of those links before!

Just done the fire pit category link - can you test it and see if I'm right now ?

It depends on why have you got 2 versions of the category page?

Most of the navigation, breadcrumbs, etc. will be pointing to the Woo category page but you have created a different version of the category page which is better at the moment and built in to your main navigation.

Ideally if you are creating a stand alone category page you would have set up the Woo category pages to redirect before Google indexed them.

It's 50 - 50 now on what is best way of doing it.

Improve the Woo categories and redirect your standalone ones to them
    or
Redirect your woo categories to your stand alone ones.

Are you tracking your money keywords?

Go to your Google Webmaster Tools ( Search Console) and look at the ranking of organic keywords over the last month.

Then go to SerpLabs and start a project tracking what you think your top 10 or so money (likely to convert) keywords.

Refine this list as you learn from your analytics what are you really money keywords ( if you can - as Google hide too many - so studying landing page of a conversion is a good idea )

So then you will have a base line to work from.

Then you can work on the copy, slowly, to ensure that the copy properly relates to the money keywords.

    Tweak, sleep, repeat, tweak

Thats the odd thing - there is only one category and one page that shows all the things in that category.

    Heres how i have it..

Page - [hanging basket brackets] - this shows all categories of bracket
Page - [dog hanging basket brackets] - this shows only the dog categories
Product - [Boxer hanging basket bracket] - the actual product page
Category - [themed-dogs] - all dog brackets are in this category

    Thats it really.

This is where i might need help - where are these result hidden in WMT?

The search results page shows results that relate only to product names it seems, whether thats good or not i don't know ;)

Certainly no category names in the list i think.

Yes, but then you created what are effectively a 2nd version of the categories.
Are those just normal wordpress pages rather than using Woo?

    Baffled again :(

Woo only has categories, products and tags, no pages (apart from actual product pages)
The other pages are all WP ones.

The category is only used to pull the similar products together in "Related products" on the products pages AFIK.

Does your site still rank at the same position within Google search?

    And

Is google your main source of traffic?

random searches today seem to show its higher i think - it would appear Google favours the product tag entry

I get 1st rank on horse basket bracket, dog basket bracket, cat etc all seem to be coming top ranking. Also 1st on corner basket bracket so i think the work is having some effect here.

Even a vague search like hanging basket bracket gets me 2nd ranking.

Yes, this month so far its Google followed by Bing for searches

    woo creates categories

You are also creating "category like" pages using Wordpress Pages

This effectively means that you have 2 URL's both creating category pages

The woo categories are built in to the system, and are linked to from various places; products, breadcrumbs, feeds, search, etc. which means most of your internal links are pointing to the wrong version of your category pages.

Creating pages for Categories is fine provided you redirect the woo categories to them (which I see you have for most of them now)

    Thanks,
redirecting the categories to the pages seems ok and works.

Can (or should) the same thing be done with product [tag] entries??

Ok, playing some more - I get really good ranking with a search term of [dog basket bracket] which is the exact term i used for the product tags on dog brackets.

Now, if i alter the search to [dog hanging basket bracket] the search fails for my products.

So, looking at that result, should i now alter my [tag] properties to be [dog hanging basket brackets] in the hope that it will capture searches for [dog hanging basket bracket], [dog hanging basket brackets], [dog basket bracket] and [hanging basket brackets] ????

Or would altering the tag upset things?

Or is it better to add multiple [tag] entries -

    [dog hanging basket bracket]
    [dog hanging basket brackets]
    [dog basket bracket]
    [hanging basket brackets]

    ??

tags can cause all sorts of problems if you are not careful.

You are effectively duplicating the page you have created for categories if you are not careful.

Also, if not careful tag pages can outrank the category and product pages, but you have little control of what they are like.

Best thing you can do is make your category titles better, although no one will see them it will control the anchor text which then redirects to your Page Categories

Edit to add, if using the tags sparingly and with a bit of thought you could redirect them to the Page Category you wouldn't want to overdo this though and shouldn't really need to (put proper links in the description instead)

    Hmm,

So you feel i should alter the category itself to something like [dog hanging basket brackets] ???
Even though it appears the tags are ranking higher?

Does duplication matter if all that happens when a person clicks on the search result is that it leads them to the correct page?

I'm still struggling here, until a day or two ago i just thought tags and categories were for site organisation but i see they are critical entities :)

Using this product as an example - https://ddmetalproducts.co.uk/product/boxer-hanging-basket-bracket-1/

Edit the product, remove the tags, put it in another category called Dog Hanging Basket Brackets, save.

Go to the product and see the link under the price

Redirect that link to the Page version of that category.

To sum up what this does
It creates better anchor text linking to the category within the woo system (in case it appears in places you are not aware of), it then redirects to the Wordpress Page that you are using for the category.

To go one step further you could edit the meta, php file in /single-product/ to remove any links to the woo category and hard code direct links to the proper categories in the descriptions (mixing up the anchor text slightly as you do it)

Ok, i'm just about grasping this :)

Question - the category [Dogs] has a slug called [themed-dogs]

Am i changing the category name OR the slug OR both ??

And you are also proposing to drop tags altogether 100% yes ??
