I just ran a load of updates on my test WP site, for the first time in a year or more it decided to tank the website and admin pages.

All i get is a blank page in Safari or an Http 500 error in Brave browser.

Its not important as its a sacrificial test site but how can i find out what tanked it so i can avoid running that update on my main site?

Go to wp_config.php and change wp_debug from false to true

This should then point to the broken bit.

I vaguely remember FTPing to the server and renaming each of the plugin folders. If the site then loads you can "un"rename each folder in turn to isolate the problem.

Of course, it might not be plugin related.

Ok, renaming the folders does nothing at all, it loads /index.php but the page is blank.

I thought i'd try a cPanel restore of the test site folder. Did not work - same result.

That makes me ask if backups actually work? I know i can reach for a duplicator copy and rebuild from that but its a pain as it needs a fair bit of work to dumb the test site down so it does not compete with the live site.

Is there actually such a thing as a one-click backup / restore for WP sites that works?

I am presuming the fault i have lies in the database maybe, but the cPanel restore did nothing for that so the question stands - is there a backup method that works??

Delete all the plugins and all themes except 2020.

If the site now loads put back the themes and plugins one by one until you find the one that breaks the site.

Duplicator is a very inefficient way to backup a site.

    I'll try that.

I know duplicator is poor - thats why a asked the question - is there a one-click backup/restore that actually works??

Looks like it might be WordFence......

"Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error."

Site appears normal now but obviously vulnerable without WF.

Is there a way to progress here?

WF was not on the update list that i ran.

Uninstall WF completely, clean up the DB then install again

Hmm, i cant see any that mention cleaning up after plugin deletion?

I have this one "Optimize Database after Deleting Revisions" but it makes no change

LOL, that was educational, sort of ;)

Tried a couple of DB cleaner plugins, no change.

Looked up how to manually delete word fence, followed the instructions and cleared the folders plus the DB tables - result was the white screen again.

Searched some more and removed a block from .htaccess file and we got a WP login screen :)

Trouble now is it won't log in i get this error....

Error: cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser. You must enable cookies to use WordPress.

I know cookies are enabled and the same browser used to work fine. I'm stuck now.

    LOL, LOL,

I tried Brave browser and,,, it logged in.

I then installed a fresh WordFence download and configured it, all ok.

Went back to my old browser and,,,, it logged in ok.

Totally baffled now, seems to be something to do with the test site not being ssl and safari blocking cookies from non-secure sites. No idea how it worked before though or how its working again now.

I really need to put some effort in and dump safari now i think, trouble is, I like it ;)

In safari, under tools use the ‘clear cache’ option and reload the page.

Tried that, there are also no cookies stored for this site in site manager either.

Its working in Brave it seems but if i look at the Redirection plugin data in Safari i get this...
