Swap £1 for £1,000,000! Is it possible? Join in my experiment and help a good cause

Hi,

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine the other week and we were debating whether or not you could swap your way up to a million pound from just £1. We had some pretty cool ideas and i woke up this morning and thought i would put them to the test. I would really appreciate people taking part. What inspired me to do this was reading the post on here about boat-cruises.co.uk. How someone had seen someone do something and then use their initiative to try and make something happen from nothing.

All the money i raise will go to a charity, and that charity will be chosen by everyone who takes part in this experiment. I have seen something similar to this where someone swapped his way from a purple pen i think it was to a £300,000+ house.

I have already started and swapped a £1 coin for 2008 computer game, and now have just swapped that game for a Blackberry phone worth £30 if i sold it to one of the places where you can sell the old mobile phones. So i 4 hours i have gone from £1 to £30...not bad going so far.

Has anyone got any good ideas that would help this work? Has anyone got anything they would like to swap for the blackberry? My main focus is to test if this will work but if i can raise money for charity along the way then that would be fantastic. I have given myself 3 months to do this and then see where i am then.

Looking forward for your input.

Yeah, I've seen this sort of thing before. I remember someone starting with a paper clip and trading up to a house (I think!). It has also been used for radio competitions in the past. It will be a huge challenge getting to a Million though! The difficulty will be getting enough interest to make this work (especially at higher price points when people will be more conscious of the value in the trade). But if you're donating all the money to a charity, then that will help. The local papers love this sort of thing.

I can't really see this getting to a million, but good luck with it! Send me a link to the website if/when its up and running.

Yeh i agree £1 million does sound unreachable, like you say, when the prices get larger, but if you are going to do something then its best to challenge yourself :)

This will only be a project around my daily work but i would like to do my best, and as i said after 3 months, what i have i will sell and donate ALL the money to charity chosen by the people who took part.

As well as papers, is there anywhere i could get people interested to take part?

Jason,

If you set your mind to this task and work at it, it will happen.

Ignore anyone who says its too difficult or you have set yourself an impossible task.

I had an old friend who is sadly no longer with us, but he had a saying which was " You only need £1 from a Million People" this guy did make it through trial and error, but he always maintained that he would get there and would not take no for an answer.

He did in-fact become a Millionaire in just under 3 years and he did start with absolutely nothing.

Good luck my friend & Keep the faith

Interesting idea. I'm not one for cheesy management phrases but with this project you are really going to have to 'think outside the box'.

The PR and media interest in this project will either see it succeed quickly, or die a slow & painful death.
You will need to built momentum and then work your arse off, to keep it going.

If you are clever, you will be thinking about additional revenue streams which can be utilised, if its successful.

100% agree! You've got to aim for something! If you only raise £1k its better than nothing.

I will put my effort in wholeheartedly, and the idea would be to have additional revenue streams that could potentially earn me a little extra for myself, but the main focus would be on raising that £1 MIL.

Well lets see how it goes i guess. I will carry on planning my next move, thanks all for your input, i will update you along the way.

Any ideas and input EXTREMELY welcome!

More than happy to help with the ideas and promotion. Although if i'm completely honest it would, to some extent, depend on your choice of charity.

Thanks Legworks, i have PM'd you. 14A, hopefully i would pay postage for my item and the person swapping would pay postage for their item. All the money will be going to charity so hopefully this is fair. Obviously larger items could be negotiated, for example if my postage was £3 and theirs was £30, we would sort something out.

I think this is a great mission you're on, if it's for a good cause then you will get a lot of support i hope. I would love to have taken a year off and do something like this myself, but alas stuck with too many bills to pay.

Fitting it around a job is possible, but personally i like to focus on one thing at a time and put all my efforts into it. Thats the best way to get success.

Good Luck
