Hi,

I've always been a self employed IT contractor but a company i've been working with want to take me on part time.

I don't know the exact details of what they're offering until Friday but any info or related links would be great on how this might affect my existing situation or tax. Also, can I still carry on freelancing outside of those hours?

You can continue to work on a self employed basis, should there be no restrictions in your contract of employment.

If you do self employed work in addition to employed work, both sources of income will need to be on your self assessment tax return.

You will be assessed under PAYE in your employment, but unless they are paying you a fortune you won't have any tax deducted. When they ask about your employment this tax year, opt for A, no previous employment, no taxable state benefits. The question about previous employment does not mean previous self-employment.

Are you self-employed, or do you operate via a limited company, and if so, do you receive a salary from the limited company as well as dividends. If so, disregard what Newchodge says about cert A on the new starter declaration. You should choose cert C and have a conversation with HMRC re your tax code.

It states self employed in the title, and in the OP.

I know, and anyone who has ever dealt with IT contractors will know that generally they consider themselves self-employed even when working via a corporate structure. Sometimes, assuming that terminology accurately represents the reality is folly. A majority of "self-employed" IT contractors probably work via a limited company or umbrella company, rather than a Sch D S/E capacity.
