Security at Exhibitions

I've got to set up for an exhibition tomorrow. After set-up do people generally leave things on the stand - ie, computers and network hardware. Is security at these places usually OK?

Are there sometimes lock-up areas available so I don't need to lug a laptop around with me after getting it all set up?

I have exhibited before using laptops etc and always ensured staff were present, or to ask another stand to keep an eye. It might be worth checking the terms and conditions of exibiting in the event that the event organisers do not accept liability for loss or damage.

Don't leave anything unattended, even for a few seconds, and don't leave anything that can be picked up overnight, even if it is hidden. Either rent/buy a nice table-top cupboard that is part of the stand and which can be locked with a key or take everything with you. As Jonathan says, even when you go to the toilet, make sure someone is watching the stand.

Thankfully there will be 3 of us on the stand durin the day. It's just tomorrows setup that I am concerned about. It's becoming a bit of a logistical nightmare. Andy has got me an interview with the FT that clashes with the set-up, so other than a couple of trips into and out of the City it's going to be a bit impractical. I never thought I'd moan about having to be interviewed by the FT!

I think I'll just play it by ear and take the laptop with me if need be (I say 'laptop' - it's a huge beast; 19" Vaio!)

Trust no one to look after your stuff for you off of other stands, and I'd not trust the venue's security to secure the place properly or even pay attention to whats going on.

It might be a pain, but if its with you its safer.

With regard the laptop, do you have a sturdy laptop case? If so put it in that. Then put the laptop case into something else.

Laptop cases tell criminals your carrying a laptop!

Agreed. A lot of equipment goes missing at exhibitions. Make sure someone is not only present at all times but also able to keep track of laptops, etc. If you must leave the booth, lock everything in a secure place. I wouldn't leave anything there overnight.
