We had a cold call from a Company called vardis re buying advertising space in a handbook that benefits The Foresters' Childrens Fund. They hassled my husband and sent to the business address, which we only use for purposes of yellow pages ad(I work as a therapist in acute adult psychiatry so protect home address from public domain) a draft ad....we never returned the ad for publishing or agreement, but on a subsequent phone call and then a fax let them know we didn't want an ad in their publication - that was OCtober 04.....things went dead for a while, then we got request for payment, again faxed them back with copies, this proceeded to the companies debt control, who i again faxed, again quiet for a few mnths, and now nearly 1 1/2 years later apparently we have been referred to a debt collection company....they don't look legitimate, call themselves crown debt recovery with very royal looking logo, no reference of them on web that i can find, and very odd, hardlty ever conatcatable by pnone just answer phone....again they are hassling us threatening, as in a year ago, court action - all this for £249 - my husband wants to pay them o they go away, however it is the principle that gets me, how do i check them out, surely a legit organisation would by now be happy to talk to us in reasonable terms about our fears and worries about being scammed, especially if they are a supposed charity.........

a penny. These sort of scams need to be reported to the DTI and Trading standards who will check them out for you. They crop up every now and again. They will not take you to court and any reputable debt collection agency will have a traceable address, phone number and be contactable. If you have not entered a contract then there is not an issue to be sued on and the courts would dismiss such an application.

I can find no trace of the charity mentioned, do you have a number for them( ie a registered charity number)?

If you email me at [email protected] or pm here with Vardis' full address I can look this up for you also.

I was contacted by Vardis and did place an ad in the Foresters' Fund for Children handbook. They were quite pushy during the initial contact but I went ahead because it was for charity. After quite a lot of chasing via email and telephone I did eventually receive a copy of the handbook about 4 months after it was first promised.

I won't be repeating the ad next year because I want to do something different as regards advertising. Vardis are the publishers and seem to do most of the cold calling on behalf of the Foresters Fund.

The fund's patrons are Sir Michael Caine, Esther Rantzen and Stephen Hendry, so is quite high profile I suppose.

I had problems with this company. I agreed to an advert as they were so pushy but later changed my mind and tried contacting them but was unable to actually get through.

I didn't pay the invoice as I wrote a letter explaining and no body ever bothered to contact me so I'm not sure whether its a scam or not. I've never actually seen the book!

Charity number is 327449.....what bothers me it is a charity that on the face appears to benefit children, however......my problem is not with Foresters Childrens Fund, the charity, rather with Vardis, the publisher......and their business practice...........i wonder what % of what they sell they give to the Charity.....the booklet can't be that prodictive n terms of monetary value from ads as it only contains about 14 ads??
I will be going to trading standards today.
WIll ley you know how it goes!

Vardis GB is according to Companies House in liquidation. It may be worth contacting the charity and asking them for information also on who is behind the publishing.

strange! I just had a call this very day. The guy went into his spiel, I asked if he could pop something in the mail - and he hung up!

Great way to represent the interests of the children!!
    Cheers, Nigel

I paid £70 a couple of years back on the promise of an advert which would appear in front of lots of people and benefit Barnardos. Vardis were the instigators and were, as you say, pushy. I went for it and up front things ran well. When I received a copy of the book I became suspicious and called them to see just how many adverts had been printed. Suddenly communication became difficult and I consider myself "scammed"

There is a Foresters company which benefits children, it is Canadian:

    foresters. &co. &uk /pas/children. & asp (i can't send urls!)

You will see (unless I missed it) no mention of the "Foresters' Fund for Children"; There is the "Foresters Fund for Children", though - notice the apostrophe in the fake(?) The look and feel of the 'legit.' site differs to that for the (so-called) fund.

The 'Foresters' fund for Children" site,

    forestersfundforchildren. & org. & uk

is changing even as I type, and is certainly unprofessional (or broken...).

My long lasting feeling is one of major discomfort and that this is a scam. Avoid it; if they are a scam, they are not likely to take anyone to court! If not, then they can answer here to defend themselves.

    Hi, by the way!

I have been doing a little bit of research today as i am totally disgused and fed up with the following company ...Vardis...and Crown Dept Recovery... because of their bulling tactics!
Barrington House PC (Andrew Lownsborough worked for this company) now operating as Hamilton Forbes Ltd, Re: advertisment and publications on behalf of The Childrens Research Fund also the Foresters Fund for Children Appeal
....VARDIS....is a company owned by Andrew Lownsborough. Andrew Lownsborough has liquidated 2 companies Vardis GB Limited and Vardis UK limited Co dissolved in the last 7 years to avoid paying tax and depts on the money he has collected from charity publications.
if you do receive an invoice from VARDIS i urge you not to check out these facts and then ask yourself a question.
Are you happy lining the pockets any company who lives of the backs of charity?

Personally we have received many threats and abuse over the phone, and letters for payment and court proceedings against us for advertising we have not asked for or agreed to! I have contacted The office of Fair Trading and the Charities Commission also Trading Standards.
We did not sign a contract or agree to any works or publications with this company.
Please STAY WELL CLEAR OF ANY DEALINGS WITH 'VARDIS' as for 'Crown Dept Recovery' they are not even registered but owned by Andrew Lownsborogh...
Let them try and take us to court!!!
if they carry on and even just threatened 10 small business in every town then they must be making a mint at £581 + recovery charge(crown dept recovery)£45 a time!

I had a company call me yesterday about advertising in a magazine. The funny thing was they called pretending to be Hampshire Police and they needed some funding for adverting for the kids! :) As we do work for the Constabulary I did ask some questions and then found out it wasn't the police but a publishing company up north! Phone went down very rapidly at that point.

I agreed in nov 2006 (after lengthy "selling" over the phone) to be in a handbook for foresters fund for children, for about £140. After discovering many details weren't as I had been told :

Can I refuse payment after finding out lots of very bad facts about them?

see blagger.com and search for vardis

search in the mirror.co.uk for "Forest Dumped"

any help would be appreciated! thanks

Ditto - I agreed verbally over the phone in Dec. I was told that all of the money would be going to Forresters. However, now hearing that only 12.5% goes to charity, there's no way I want to hand my money over.

It's not gone to print yet, as I've just today received my draft artwork (awful btw!), so hopefully I can get out of this. Normally I've always said no to these types of people on the phone, but this guy was very pushy, yet very convincing that all of the money was going to charity.

Don't they have to publish that number in order to remain a charity?

I had somthing similar from a company called taylor tanner publications about a child safety awareness campain. Load of crap con artists is what they are.

This sounds to me as if they are the same company just with a differnet name. All happened about a year ago nearly. I got a solicitor friend and customer to tell them to get lost or bring it on. Needless to say the did the first!
