Remove the Ltd from name of a Limited company

Hello all

I wonder if anyone could help me out with a quick question

Is it possible to remove the Ltd from the name of a Limited company? and if so how do I go about it??

The company is changing its structure to become a not for profit organisation and possibly to eventually become a CIC. The existing Ltd at the end of the name will no longer align with the ethos of the company - hence the desire to remove this.

Yes, but you would either have to become an unlimited company, or else a company limited by guarantee and satisfying certain companies act requirements (s60 of Companies Act 2006 I think).

This is definitely not a DIY job and you should seek detailed legal advice.

If you are talking about this from a brand perspective them simply drop the usage of the Ltd in mainstream use.

If you are John Smiths Ltd then simply become John Smiths Ltd trading as John Smiths.

You then only need to refer to yourself as John Smiths Ltd on invoices, bottom of legal documents, small print etc.

simple solution is to cease trading as a ltd co, and re-start using alternative format on the same day.

the limited co is an entity in its own right and as such you always have to use the Ltd tag on documents.

Company Limited by Guarantee, Charity or CIC are the standard formats for not-for-profits, or simply write a constitution and become a community organisation.
