Release of PayPal Funds on eBay

Just had this msg from a seller on eBay

"Hi, pls leave us feedback if everything is fine with your order. After you leave feedback paypal will pay us.Thanks"

Is that right that eBay will only pay them if I leave feedback?

Sounds like a load of old monkey to me.

I gave up leaving feedback on eBay years ago.

Correct - thats nonsense. Sellers heavily rely on feedback to improve their ratings and seller status. They could just ask you nicely rather than blatently lying.... lol I'd be tempted to leave neg feedback due to their 'tactics'.

Given that this 'hold' is real, not nonsense, if you did leave negative feedback I suspect it would be removed by eBay...

Sorry to disappoint... but it's actually TRUE

eBay/Paypal introduced new rules last year where if you weren't a power seller or had feedback of less than (maybe 500?) then the only way the money will be released to you is when they either leave positive feedback or 30 days have elapsed and no dispute has been raised.

Wow - thats harsh !
Tell me about it!

I got shafted last summer. I sold a mobile phone to a perfectly genuine guy who was going to the states to see his in-laws the next day (early) and wanted it before he left. So I agreed to have it couriered to him and he didn't mind paying the cost.

It cost me about £30 altogether which I obviously had to pay out of my own pocket until PayPal cleared. He rang me when he got it, and was over the moon as it arrived literally 10 minutes before the taxi arrived.

Anyway, long story short... because he was away for so long, he couldn't leave me any positive feedback. And it was a MONTH plus 5 working days transfer time before I saw sight of that money from that phone which totalled over £400. All thanks to PayPal's ridiculous system. I wonder how much interest they make on this scam?

I've never used eBay since. Gumtree is the way forward.

Sellers most of the times pushing buyers to leave feedback for them as they need it for power seller score etc. Many of eBay users (customers) do not remember to leave feedback to sellers, including me sometimes heh.. so that's why they sending feedback reminders with kind of content to prompt buyer to leave a feedback.

Bloody eBay and PayPal - they and Amazon think they rule the online retail world.

Come to think of it I suppose they do
Yeah exactly! The unfortunate story is, they do.

Until somebody has the time and money to throw at a competitive site, they will always control the market and the rules that go with it.

I remember when eBay was first becoming hot about 10 years ago, I used to love using it. There was a rival to eBay called QXL, I've just looked it up now and it's some Dutch auction site now, so I guess they crumbled.

It's not all bad though, I now know there is a place called Nigeria somewhere in the world! :p

Hi,yes for new seller, the money is kept with paypal until positive feedback or 21 days has happened.

Once you have been on Ebay for 90days are these restrictions are lifted.

Ebay is still powered by feedback.A lot of sellers are not too happy if feedback(positive) is not given. The more feedback that is given the higher that the listings will go.

Some sellers would rather have pos feedback than the money!!!.

After 90 days I received my money no probs, even with 1 neg!!.I can only assume ebay/paypal have some issues with you.Poss selling record.

Do you do a lot of selling!!!.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my Paypal/eBay record thank you very much.

I buy more than I sell, but it doesn't matter as feedback is feedback. All of which is positive.

I'll have a look at the rules tonight and post them up for all to refer to.

As mentioned this normally applies to new sellers, so if you are happy why not leave the feedback you are prepared too and get on with life, everyone has to start somewhere.

I've never been limited etc in many years on ebay and paypal, a lot depends on the type of goods more than feedback, since mobiles for instance carry a lot more risk than door handles from a fraud point of view.

The problem for most sellers and buyers is ebay and paypal move the goal posts at will.

In 2005 I began trading on eBay, and when I closed my account in 2009 I was a powerseller with nearly fifteen thousand feedbacks (100% positive). I would have loved to have continued using eBay, but it was becoming more and more difficult to keep up with their constant tinkering of the rules and regulations. I was truly terrified of the power eBay and Paypal had over my business. They could literally close you down instantly if you fell foul of any one of their countless policies. It felt like I was their employee. That's why I started up my own websites.
Are they as profitable as when I was trading on eBay? Not always. It's certainly harder to keep driving traffic to my own site. But I certainly sleep better at night now, as I don't have the constant worry of losing my business hanging over me.

I see that you also run a leaflet distribution business do you deliver your own leaflets to drive traffic to your websites? I ask as I am in the process of starting my own website and had considered this, do you use any other off-line forms of marketing / advertising to drive traffic to your websites?

I do. Sometimes a customer will only want to pay for a shared distribution with other items, but I have nothing else for that area. So, I put my leaflets for my ecommerce site out alongside theirs - that way i get paid for delivering my own leaflets :D

I used to have posters that were put up in some local factories canteens offering staff discounts to employees, but that has dwindled in recent times due to a lot of them closing :(
