Hi all,

Just a little confusion here on my part.

I am ranking quite well for the keywords that i targetted although for the longer tailed words not so well.

I believe when it comes to a few competitors we are out ranking them for the main keywords but traffic is hovering between a certain period.

My question is, a few competitors are ranking well for longer tailed words.

e.g. black and white handbag or black bag with silver handle etc and it seems they are getting quite a lot of hits from these searches.

I dont want to intentionally rank for those long tailed words but am i right in thinking those words they are ranking well for has come around due to their age?

The sites have been around a lot longer and i doubt they are targetting those longer tailed keywords.

Is it just a matter of a waiting game and making the most of the traffic i have now? Or is there any great tips that you may be able to give me or should i be doing something that i aint doing?

Also i noticed these other few sites have more stock then me meaning more pages being indexed and ranked. Could it be this and is it correct that if i put more products up with good quality content. I should start to rank for more longer tailed words.

Any advice is appreciative as i am happy with the main keywords i am targetting

Thanks

I think this was mostly covered before on that long thread we had about your SEO in August. I would suggest reading it through as there was some excellent advice.....clue...back links and yes domain age

Well, you need to also optimise your content and pages for long tail keywords you want to target. It is generally easier to succeed in better ranking with long tail keywords, as you are not going to face as much competition as for the short keywords. It is also known that those keywords are more precise and therefore bring more conversions, i.e. ROI. However, they will not get as much traffic as shorter terms and they will not bring as much money as the short keywords would if you were on the first page.

So yes, if you want to rank high then you need to optimised every single page on your website. This should also help with more pages being indexed.

I'd say it's not domain age so much as them having more or stronger backlinks to their site than you. Generally speaking, optimising your site for long tail keywords is a waste of time unless they happen to be very high demand (which only happens in very big niches, like Internet marketing - unlikely to be worthwhile in your niche). If you have a large, quality content site with lots of good backlinks, long tail traffic happens automatic. Trying to optimise your content for long tail keywords is futile, since most of those searches will only ever happen once. Just add more content on a range of topics, build links, and the long tail will come.
