I watched a video about the factors that effect ranking in maps, couldn't find it again.

Things that are included are:

Distance
Perceived size of business (if you're talked about a lot online)
Traffic (to your site)
User signals (clicks to your map link, or searches like [business name] in [your location])
Reviews (whether you've been reviewed and how many you have)

Those are ones I remember.

So I would get on some forums and start talking about your business, set up a twitter (if you don't already have one) and submit your business to some social business listing sites like; bview, qype, yelp, brownbook, hotfrog, touchlocal etc etc..

i have created two other listings for my services in different areas but have noticed that i have been put down in the listing results, i have since deleted the other two listings - how long will i be penalized for? or even can i find out if i have been penalized it might just be a change i made to my main initial listing?

Maps are to irratic, i dont think they are worth putting to much effort into really. They are probably going to turn it into a paid form of advertising soon. They made the maps instead of buying yell.com so its obvious they are going to turn it into paid advertising, just a question of when.

I lost patience with it anyway, i know how to rank for cities but it does not last long till they move you back down.

Agree they are erratic, but they put you on the first page immediately and they bring quite a few clicks. Try to update text in your listing maybe. I think Google just found some other listing more relevant to the keyword you are after. In maps you can see results quite fast, so just tweak it a bit and make it more relevant for the keyword to see if it will chage the position. :)

Thankyou! You got me up one place from G to F which is certainly better than a good old fashioned kick in the teeth!

Does anyone know if you are supposed to put your location in the catergory fields? eg category: 'my service my location'

Just tried it doesn't make any difference but i think i know why i am down so low amongst my competitors- i don't have enough links to my website seen by google places only links from my own site 7 times with only one independent free index link where as my competitors all have at least 3 independant links confirmed in google places as well as their own few!

Any idea how i get links listed on google places? i am listed in more than one directory other than fee index but they are not showing up there

You dont tweak and see instant results. It can take 5 hours to a day or more to see the changes take effect.

If you want to build up a few links use

Hotfroguk make a listing and inside the listing place your comapny name exactly as it appears on google places and add your address under it. Places will pick the hotfrog with your biz name and address up.

Also http://www.Uksmallbusinessdirectory.co.uk

Get free listings on thompson and yell they help to give you a boost.

write a blog post on a site with your comp name and address.
