PRS & PPL, how much?

I'm looking into opening a small coffee shop that music will play an important part of. I was wondering roughly how much it has cost people in the past and how big/small your stores are? I can get a rough estimate from the PPL website but PRS not so much. Of course as this is just early days and I don't know exactly how big the premises I'll be acquiring will be, so it's pretty hard to judge. Finally - I'm assuming it's an annual fee? If so, is it likely to ever fluctuate in price?

The PRS fee depends on various things

• Whether you have more than one source of music
  • tv
  • music system
  • juke box
• The size of the premises
• How many customers you can accommodate
• If you have paid events

The more questions you say yes the more the fee is.

Well the very nature of the shop I want to open isn't the typical coffee shop! My question wasn't "do I need music?" ..just trying to get more of an idea about to costs of playing music.

PRS are actually easy to talk to and happy to discuss options, and will give you what you need over the phone. They would rather chat before the event I've always found. Give them a ring. The tariffs are on the web site but there are quite a few.

I have a cafe. I pay about £130 +VAT for each license. And my cafe is 50 sqm.
Hope that helps.

I rang up about starting an internet radio station and for the tier that was relevant to me based on my income it was £133 + VAT per year which I thought was very reasonable based on the amount of different music you can play on your radio station.
