Paid off without notice?

I work in a residential home and there was an accident were part of the building collapsed. They are saying they are moving the residents to another home but they dont need the staff. Can they just pay up off without any notice or pay? We were told they could because of safeguarding (the residents). But lots of us will be without a job?:|

It depends how long you've worked there, if less than a year forget it, if more than 2 years i think they need to pay some sort of redunancy.

Either way you need to find out quickly and make sure the company is following the law. How many people are at risk of losing their job???
