I am running Windows10. Until fairly recently, if I clicked on a document online I would be offered the choice of opening or saving it. Now it seems that, whatever I want to open, I can only save it. Has something changed with windows, have I inadvertently changed a setting, and is there any way to get back to being able to open it?

There are two things that can affect this. Firstly the website can force a PDF to be downloaded. So it would be worth trying to open a PDF on a totally different website and see if that downloads too.

The other thing may be the browser. Google Chrome and the new Microsoft Edge both have in built PDF functionality but older browsers may not be able to display PDFs and so will only download. Check if you are using Chrome or Edge too.

Personally, I prefer to use Adobe Acrobat Reader which is free to download and use. It integrates with the browsers and provides a bit more functionality than the in built PDF readers do. It may be worth downloading and installing that.

    Thanks

It is happening on numerous websites. I am using Firefox, with the latest version installed, and I have Adobe Acrobat Reader, which kicks in when I select the saved file. It never seemed to be an issue until about 2 months ago. It isn't only PDF's either, the occasional online word doc seems to have the same issue.

Ah ok maybe this is related to a setting in Firefox, please try the following:

    Open the Firefox Options window
    Select the Applications tab
Locate Portable Document Format (PDF) on the list of file types
Change the Action to Preview In Firefox
    Click OK

This should allow you to preview most files in Firefox.

This will not work in all cases because some website contain codes to force the browser to download instead of preview.

Failed at the first hurdle! I cannot find a Firefox Options location.

I went into settings and found this
    Files and Applications
    Downloads
    Save files to
    (option)
    Browse…
Always ask you where to save files
    (option)

That only seems to allow saving, not opening

Oh dear, maybe it's worth considering changing browser to Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (chromium version).

Although it used to be very popular. we don't have any clients left using Firefox any more.

I still prefer Firefox or Brave. Much easier to block trackers.

I'm a massive Firefox fan. Until another browser implements something like Firefox Containers, where you can keep certain websites completely isolated, I'll never switch.

I used to use firefox as my main browser but it seems so slow now even after checking addons and files. I now use Brave, but have the same problem in that I can only save a file as a PDF and not just open it. These does not appear to be any settings to change to allow this to happen. Does any one =know of a work around. Sorry to hijack this thread but it seems similar.
