Not really related to small business, but as there are so many helpful and knowledgable people here I thought I'd ask anyway.

A stock on the London Stock Exchange has caught my eye. I've never dealt with public stocks and shares before and I'm aware there are a number of online systems for doing this.

Can any of you reccomend one that's affordable and reputable?

Thanks

Value investing is the secret to long-term growth. The ones who can learn about it will be more adept at handling the fluctuations of the market than those who cannot pick up this skill. The basic characteristic of value investing is that it involves buying securities – the shares of which seem under-priced by basic analysis. In fact, the essence of value investing may be said to be purchasing stocks at a value that is less than their intrinsic value.

Motley Fool would have been my recommendation to find a good one.

They are probably the most active online community finance centre. There has been quite some amusing stuff from them, I think the foolish eight was an interesting idea.

On the whole they do try to demystify the financial world, but it is quite seductive so sometimes they fall into their own wise traps. They are good on the mechanics of it all though.

The truth is it is very hard to beat the market average, but in a market that is on the up a spread portfolio is generally going to perform well. MF made their name on index trackers, and whilst the base of the idea is sound, the actual implementations did vary from tracker to tracker.

Duane... It depends on your objective - there are major options here.

Spreadbetting is tax free, and allows rapid and cheap exit and entry - but only try it on liquid stocks, and the prices can be out of kilter with rapid variations - which is a two edged sword. I use several, Can set stop losses etc. Well worth doing for speculation in liquid stocks.

Costs nothing for transactions, and bid offer spreads are low - also allows margined trading. Trading big positions.

Trading in nominee accounts, also allows you to trade inside an ISA if you wish - halifax was not bad...but I havent done that in a while. Also, expect market makers to fail to quote in rapidly moving markets.

If you want to go to meetings, then you probably need certificated shares. It is expensive, clunky at takes a long time, so dont do this if you expect volatitily

Finally you can now trade stocks inside a SIPP - well worth considering for longer term portfolio.

To complete the picture trading futures, or american - or wanting to use mechanised trading, can be worth ooking at interactive brokers.

Muggins traded full time for some months so got to know a fair amount about trading. Made a bit of moolah....Hated the lifestyle. Just isnt me.

Many people were busy with buying and selling stocks in the past, but now as the recession has hit the economy most of them fear to get into the investment schemes as it may lead to loss. There are many ways to make profit in stock market even when the stock market is running low. One of the techniques would be short selling. If this method is understood completely and implemented in the stocks then there are huge chances of earning income.

Short-selling is probably what has led to this current situation that we are in right now. For everyone that says now is a horrible time to invest i personally think it is the best time if you have the cash. Every stock is at rock bottom and is going to go up.

On a side note is there any info on where to sign up for short-selling? I have an account at barclays but I dont believe you can short sell from there.
