Major brand no ranking

Hi,

I look after a site which hosts a variety of major brands which all rank very well for a variety of important keywords.

However, I have one major brand which doesn't rank at all for a vast amount of keywords. This brand page and sub pages all follow the same format as other pages within my website.

Where can I check / what tools can I use to see if there are any issues related to the page? What is the best course of action to take?

Any helpful would be greatly appreciated.

You can check the keyword position in Google Webmaster tools and the number of backlinks a particular keyword has. This helps in determining the actual cause and take a action.

No penalty appears to have been applied.

With 'keyword position in Google Webmaster tools and the number of backlinks a particular keyword has' which section of GWT can I find this?

You can see the keyword position under "Search traffic-search queries" and you can check the backlinks just below search queries "links to your site"

It shows that the brand page is in my top 5 most linked content with 36 different domains linking to the page which is not too dissimilar from my other brand pages which are ranking highly. Could it be the quality of the sources that is not helping?

try searching a snippet of the pages content in Google (in quotation marks) you might find that the content is duplicated on another domain and therefore has no weight attached from Google. This has happened to a lot of sites I work with - where either they have multiple domains with almost identical sites or they've had their site copied.

Install a free program called "Screaming Frog". It show very useful information about all your pages and files. If there is an error, you will notice it there - The code won't be 200 OK. You can also use MajesticSEO to find, if somebody have spammed your website with low-quality links. Eventually, you should do whatever you can to remove such links. Contact the website admins or simply create a Disavow file vie Webmaster Tools. Wish you luck!

Could it be the quality of the sources that is not helping?

Yes it can be the quality but there might be other issues as well. Have you checked the brand page as how Google bot can see try some text browser or tool? May this might be helpful

Are the pages that are linking to the brand page highly related to the brand/niche?

major brands do not guarantee the top ranking for any website, the other reason might be that this brand is having high competition when compared to other brands and categories. It is also better to check if that brand has copied content from others, there is a high possibility that others can also copy from your website and work hard to overshadow your website.
