Licences and other stuff to open a shop

Hi All,

I am wanting to open a junk shop in my area, selling things like second hand clothes (branded), electrical items, such as car audio, game consoles, computers, and various other items.

Also in the rear of the shop, I would like to have a place where people can bring in their computer to be repaired, or even just for a fresh install etc etc.

Both of these areas, are not covered where I live, and ultimately long term I would like to have 3-4 shops around my area.

So I am asking you:
Is there a licence/s for selling used clothes?
Electrical items?

Or anything that I need to be aware of, obviously I will offer some warranty etc.

Thanks for your time.

Kind Regards

Hi Puffin,

Wow, there seems to be a good demand nowdays for 2nd hand goods, and as far as clothing is concerned, as long as its been washed and looks decent i don't think you'll have any problems.

As for electricals especially 2nd user you'll need to have them Pat Tested and I'd guess you'll need some insurance cover to cover yourself should anyones house burns down as a result of your 2nd hand toaster ;)

Pat testing okay, thats something I hadnt thought about it, but thats cheap enough.

Insurance, yeah I thought that.
Would it be like public liability insurance?

Cheers

Hi

Not heard of any licence needed for clothes & 'junk', but some shops and lease's have certain restrictions on them (what can be sold, opening times, etc.) so check carefully before you sign on the dotted line.

Recently I've been buying clothes at car boot sales (for 50p/£1), ironing them, labelling them and selling them at the same car boot sale the following week for £3/£4/£5. Def a market out there for clothes!

yeah you'd need that for the shop to protect your customers, as well as it being a requirement for the shop building and contents insurance.

just make you you specifically include the selling of 2nd user electricals in the insurance specs
