Yes, door-to-door sales aren't as common as they used to be but we do get the odd occasion where someone will attempt to sell us double glazing!

Telemarketing (or cold-calling) is still a common practice over here and some companies find that telemarketing is a key part of their marketing strategy. However, I think there is a new legislation being bought out soon to limit or stop certain marketing calls to consumers?

Telemarketing is growing in my opinion,

With massive companies in the UK such as BT selling your information on to marketing companies, some households find themselves receiving 15-20 calls a week! (although bt deny this)
My grandparents were an example.

The worst cold callers are for businesses, As you know businesses need to get their contact details out there to have the best chance of success in todays markets,
Unfortunately telesales companies jump on this!

I remember the last business I ever worked for, We'd get 20+ telesales calls a day, Giving me a chance to be sarcastic to people over the phone I asked everyone to put all Sales calls through to me, They wished they'd never called once I'd told them all about the bad day I was having for 10 minutes, Either that or told them straight that we didn't want it and never to call again.

Not so sure on Door-To-Door sales though, the last D2D sale I had was for a screen cleaning product, but the young lad was working on behalf of a council run project to get unemployed people back into the swing of working, so I did not mind buying it. (Works pretty well too!)

We use both telemarketing and door to door. The telemarketing is only made to people that have opted in to having somebody call them from a previous survey they have participated in. We do not randomly call. Yes we door knock. The reason being is that we have some new technologies that would benefit homeowners and some products that are free and the homeowner is entitled to. I cannot count on how many occasions that once we have explained what we do how many people have said how glad they were that we had knocked/phoned.
We have to promote our products somehow and we find that these are the best ways to explain what we do and how they can benefit the homeowner. We quickly find out if there is interest. If not we move on. That's it

How do you find you get over that initial pitch? I expect it would be so difficult to do as the first 5-10 seconds are the most crucial, being able to engage them in what you have, whilst also letting them know YOU ARE NOT SELLING!

I'd expect the majority of people answer the door thinking "Not again" and stop listening after 3 seconds unless you capture their mind, atleast, I would anyway...

Well if it is the free products were are promoting we just say we are in the area making sure homeowners have had all the freebies that they are entitled to. People are naturally curious as to what is free and conversation starts. Bear in mind we do not push anyone at the door, no hard sell. Within ten seconds or so we will know. If no interest shown we move on. There will always be someone that is and they are who we are looking for.

The key to the conversation is the word "Free"
we all love a freebie[/QUO

You would think it would be that easy wouldn't you? but no..in reality it isn't. Maybe it is the fact that people do not trust people at the door offering freebies. perhaps daddy told them a long time ago that there is no such thing as a free lunch...beware of Greeks bearing gifts... etc etc. it isn't as easy as you would think to be honest. However there are sufficient out there that can see the benefits and accept the products we offer.
It would be really interesting to know how many people who, after telling us where to go and shutting the door, actually start to think about what we sad and regret not hearing us out.
Perhaps I should get a team follow us around within minutes with a survey about how they feel about door canvassing :D

I expect alot of people probably do regret saying no or not giving you chance to explain yourself, especially when the neighbour talks to them about the benefits!
