An email was sent to me, the text looks like some kind of code, it is not some font or language that I have seen before, a zip file was also attached to it. Could it be a virus, or could it have been sent incorrectly? I removed it.

Could have been lots of things.
Best course of action is to delete, which you did.

    Almost certainly dodgy.

When I receive emails, I always think:

    1) Am I expecting an email off this person
    2) Is this email actually from the person, or has their address been spoofed
    3) Does the text read like the way they would typically write to me
    4) Is it about something that I would normally discuss with them.
    5) Is the quality of the email content as I'd expect from the sender(e.g. no minor typo's in a marketing email from a large company)

If the answer to any of the above answers is no, it gets trashed. If it's from an existing contact, you can always contact them to see if the original email was genuine, but quite frankly my threshold for trusting emails is really low.

Yes, it can be a virus as an email virus has malicious code, and it is activated when a user clicks on a link or open a zip file, attachment or interacts in some other way with the infected email message. So, you did the right thing by deleting it.
