Importing from China

I'm considering importing a specific consumer electronic item from China for resale in the UK. I have already got prices from the supplier but before I determine a proposed selling price, I need to know if I will have to pay any tax/duty etc on importing. The value of the items will be under £2 each if that makes a difference. Any help appreciated.

    Hello.

You intend to re-sell the items, so you have a lot more to consider than the selling price. A freight provider like Phillip John has guidedyou in the right direction for the time after you have placed an order, but the hardest bit to get right is before that - ensuring that the quality, testing and labelling meets your standards and EU standards.

I buy from China I (I am not a freight forwarder so have no personal interest in this) and would recommend you read this https://thewoodlandgroup.wordpress.com/ . It is much more than a how to do it guide.

Be careful to test the products throughly, if possible, send to a lab to get your own CE certificate.

Keep in mind, lots of Chinese suppliers may claim their products are CE certified, but it's NOT enough to only see a copy of the certificate, as it happens often that either the CE certificate is for general production line (such as all kinds of power banks, not for the specific item you buy), or the certificate is forged indeed.

    Rookery,

tax/VAT will be determined by the type of product, but, most electronics (outside of computers) will have VAT and import duty (13.8%?).

You will also need to make sure the items are compliant with UK/EU regs. Many factories will supply CE certs that are worthless - it is your responsibility to ensure compliance and you will need to take out product liability insurance.

D not be surprised if that £2 product cost £4-5+ when sitting in your warehouse/front room!
