    Hey,
I'm planning to set-up a business to import Alcohol from the EU for distribution in the UK. I would like to know if any members have any experience in setting up similar businesses and direct me to some appropriate forums/contacts.

I have done some research on UK GOV / HMRC website. However it is quite overwhelming and I am looking for simple information such as clarity import duties, quality check etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you
    E.

Have you imported from outside the EU in the past?

Quality check you may want done before sending to you. Duty will depend on the item code - and what our government want in money.
You can look up the customs codes to see what charges will apply for duty. And vat you already know about.

Before doing anything, understand the costs.

Most people find out that most of the cost on wine and spirits is duty too late!

You will need to become very knowledgeable on the legislation and duties attaching themselves to alcohol.

Otherwise, there is no reason not to press on with this. But don't do it without knowing exactly how much you are going to be paying for the product, and how much in duties on top, and how much to transport it. Pretty much as for importing from any country.

As a quick check to consider ballpark figures, that may work, but if you are serious about this type of business you will have to understand the 'overwhelming' information. If you are overwhelmed you will not be likely to make a success of this type of business.

This is exactly true. In each of our businesses there are some things that take a while to learn. In the business you propose you have to understand the rules in importing and tariffs.

Either that, or you need to pay someone to understand them for you - an accountant.
