I want to set up an import/ export business and i am not sure of where to start from. As i have no experience, and capital to start off as a distributor, i was thinking of becoming an agent/consultant. My idea is to focus on importing exotic organic fruits into the UK. How do i locate suppliers with specific products? What is the best route to take in starting off?

Setting up your own business is extremely hard work and high risk but if successful is very satisfying and rewarding. On the other hand if it fails, it will hurt you hard especially financially. From your initial comments/questions you are not ready to start your own business. I would suggest you get a job working in the sector you are keen to start a business in and go from there.

    Exactly.

I would even go further and ask - WHY do you want to start such a business when you don't have any experience or resources?

I'm sorry but it sounds totally unrealistic to me.

First of all you need to study as well as possible the market to know exactly what is working and what not.
Then you need to find a financement to start your business

We work with a number of importers of fruit and vegetables. It's quite costly to set up a distribution network. You need chilled storage facilities, a ready list of customers to sell too - fresh fruit and veg won't keep - you need to be able to sell it on very quickly. Purchasing is high risk and you can never guarantee what condition the produce are in when they arrive - sometimes it just dosn't work out. It goes without saying you need a fairly substantial budget to enter this market. As other commentators have said I don't think you are ready to take that leap yet. If you are not particularly wedded to exotic fruits but like the idea of being an importer I would encourage you to do it but look around for some easier products to start with.
