Same situation. Great MSN rankings, poor google rankings
However, I have managed to get on page one of googel through the backdoor, so to speak.
My listing on SPLUT has it's page ranked about 7th on google, for used car sales, used cars for sale.

Have a look to see if any of the front page listings have directorys you can get listed in, might help?

How many hites go you get from that - I can see many people typing in 'used car sales, used cars for sale' into Google. ([SIZE=-1]Results 1 - 10 of about 38 for "used car sales, used cars for sale".) whilst the induivual works are fighting against 21 million others the combination in that order is quite rare.[/SIZE]

An more useful example (IMO) is for a company Quore Business Solutions where their listing on webit.net comes above anything else (including their own site!)

I prefer yahoo although it makes no difference as it is worthless being at the top if it does not bring any traffic.

page 1 position 4 of 134,000,000 for the term local advertising

page 1 position 7 of 93,400,000 for the term UK advertising


free classifieds free advertising are work for 2007.

odd how msn always seems to have less results, i guess they are still building up their cache.

Their site is very, very poor seo wise. To be honest, if I was searching for their company I wouldn't click on a "directory" style link in the results. I wonder how anybody ever finds them?

Yep - I've not looked at it for a very long time - err. no text or metas on the landing page or index page!!

We do send quite a bit of traffic through to them (in 2005 we send 30k+ visitors to sites on the webit.net) which I doubt would find the home page otherwise.

first i need to be clear i ment "used car sales" and "used cars for sale" as two separate keyphrases. not one merged.
With regards traffic, between 10 and 50 visitors a day from splut. Google adwords is too competitive fro my keywords. I spent a shed load on it and got nothing, paying 30p a click average, splut gets the site name out there-in the natural listings, and is returning what I want it to, for 5p a click. Not many people are using it as a paid listing yet, which means you can bid minimum 5p and get listd top!!

Just my experiences with it.

We were the same for ages - doing great on MSN and Yahoo - nothing on Google,

now though we are #1 for

free bookkeeping software uk
bookkeeping software mac

and on page 1 for lots of other relevant terms.

I think the advice from Tin and Rob re fresh content every day made a huge difference.

Used *make of car* for sale

i.e.

used bmw for sale
used vw for sale
used ford for sale
used volvo for sale

etc. etc.
