I do disagree with who said you cannot make money from a forum.

We have easily re-couped our cost and we are now heavily investing turnover into growth.

No, it's anything but invitation only. Simply spam and dross-free.

I would no longer advise vbulletin - since the development company, Jelsoft, were bought out, vbulletin is becoming a laughing stock - constant bug issues, vb4 is a farce, and the licence terms have been changed to be punitive. vb forums are more likely to behacked now, whereas for years they were practically bullet proof.

I run a number of vb forums but am now having to consider moving to IBP or SMF. vbulletin is no longer worth it.

I can agree with your assessment of vb4, I'm in the progress of downgrading to vb3 now, but it's still a very solid product (vb3)

Yes, vb 3.x is fine, but InternetBrands have made it clear it will not be fully supported - it now costs just to have ticketing support for a forum licence only - and on the vb forums it's suggested that some bug fixes set for 3.8.7 will be the last 3.x release.

This is where a number of vb developers have fled to:

I'm frankly astonished at how much InternetBrands have managed to alientate the original vb developers - there are only a couple of them left since the takeover.
