I've found that by posting Ads on Gumtree you can increase the traffic, and the good thing is it is for free!
(I think this one is among the 101 other recommendations, but it is worth mentioning!)

The one thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned is non web advertising - i.e. relevant magazine ads, newspapers etc. If you're a localised business this is especially important, but I've found raising your profile among target audiences (e.g. for me Patchwork & Quilting magazine etc) is invaluable.

The key to traffic is SEO !!!

Having said that adwords is fine for a new site if your return is good

    a few facts:

If you are at the top of a search engine ,the general public believe it to be an endorsement for your site by the search engine.

Only 1 in 10 will click on adwords the rest prefer organic results.

Proper SEO is the most important part of any site ,followed by content which is carefully scripted as part of the SEO.

    At least a 100 page site .

Links from high PR sites that are relevant to your products / services.

    figures:

No 1 on google gets twice the traffic of No 2

58% of visitors do not go beyond the first page of a search engine

Use articles . Use SEO. Use Adwords. Most importantly use common sense.

You might get some tips from this website:

'The book takes you step by step through working out what it unique and special about your business, to writing and sending your own press releases. Packed with low cost techniques for getting your business noticed, just follow the steps in the book and you will reach more customers.

There is a website, http://prbasics.co.uk, to accompany the book, with lots of free resources and essential links. Visit the site to download a template to help you plan your business promotion, a template for writing your own press releases, and more. You can also see extracts from the workbook, and submit your own suggestions for useful resources.'
