most people who use joomla and design their own websites use a template framework and most of them seem to be free. This is the one i am going to use.

    www . gantry-framework .org

Also, there are a lot of free joomla templates out there.

    www . joomla24 . com

If you know a bit of PHP, it's not too difficult to develop a Joomla templkate from scratch.

I have a book - Joomla Templates by Angie Radtke - that explains how to go about it.

You don't have to be a PHP programmer, but it helps to have had a bit of experience in that area.

Though it isn't too difficult to make a Joomla template, unless you really want to do it for learning purposes or need specific customizations, in which case Joomla may not be the best platform anyway, you may want to look at some of the pre built templates out there.

We have used Rockettheme many times and they provide some outstanding templates for the price. The good thing about it is that as well as the bare template you always get a bunch of other modules too that can help build a powerful and attractive site, very quickly.

All of the templates over the last couple of years at least are built on the Gantry framework mentioned above.

I would definitely recommend you have a look before starting from scratch.

I agree that developing a joomla template from scratch is great if you want to learn a bit more about how joomla works, but it does mean that you're re-inventing the wheel to a large extent.

For starting new projects that aren't based on a specific template, I always use either Yootheme's Nano template or Rocket Theme's Afterburner

Both really fast loading, clean and easy to build into whatever you want them to be

I am telling from my experience that best way is to find a template that is free and edit it to your liking.

The best option is to find a professional web developer who can develop joomla websites as per your business industry requirements.
