Help with Google search results?

Hi there!

I've set up a new website and when I search it on google, Google shows my contact page rather than my homepage like it should.
I can't understand why Google thinks my "contact" page is my "homepage.

Can anyone help? I've tried changing a few things but nothing seems to work!

Perhaps your contact page is your most linked to page within your site, mentions your company name, has your address, etc?

Have you submitted your homepage to the various citation sites which link Name, Address, Phone with your domain?

Does your homepage have any spammy signals or lack sufficient content?

There's a hundred possible explanations - without reviewing the specifics there's no way of knowing for sure...

Chances are that, the page in question relates more to the search you put in due to several factors. As webgeek states, it could be for lots of reasons.

Thank you for your replies. I submitted it to google analytics as a whole website is that what you mean?
The website is [website removed] if that helps. It hasn't got my phone number or anything on the Contact page just a form to fill in which connects to my email.
I thought about adding it to google places but it requires you to put your address in and I'm working myself from my house. I've just started so I haven't got an office or anything and I think it looks unprofessional if people see it's just a house haha!
I've changed a few things but it remains the same and now it's showing up on page 2 of Google rather than page 1 grrr.
Sorry if I sound stupid this is all new to me!

Google gives new sites a bit of a boost until it has fully indexed everything. Ranking often then drops once Google has finished and has decided where you should rank.

If your contact page is the one Google likes then you need to put all the content on the homepage and see what happens. As an aside, all your contact details should be on the homepage anyway.

Fisicx makes a good point but I'd also list the business on Google Places if you haven't already. It gives you the opportunity to give more information about the business like opening times and receive reviews etc. Plus if you can get listed here, map listings tend to be shown higher on the page. Helps if you're offering your Services to local customers.

Customers are less likely to buy from you without any address than an unprofessional address.

When I worked from home, I gave my house a name - "The Station House" - which I felt made it sound like a more professional location. Maybe you could consider something similar?

Haven't heard it referred to as "Google Places" for a long time. It's known as Google My Business (google.com/business) now and you can add your business there and you can choose not to display your address.

If you go and add your listing, then you'll see an option that says:

"I deliver goods and services to my customers at their location"

Select "Yes". This means that you don't have customers come to your location and Google will therefore feature your business in the area but not specify your address in maps.

Definitely do this as it's quite important these days to tell Google about what you do. Make the listing as complete as possible.

In terms of your ranking search results issue, it can happen with new sites, I see it all the time. Submit an XML sitemap in Google Search Console and add links to your website from your social sites, a couple of good business directories and it should correct itself shortly.

What have you used to build your website? It might be that the platform has a plugin to help with SEO (e.g. if you're using Wordpress, look for Yoast, there's a free version and it can help optimise your site).

It has something to do with your meta title and description within your site. Include and optimize them according to your website's summary and benefits for the content description.

I certainly wouldn't buy anything from anyone if the website didn't have an address and telephone number as apart from anything else they are legal requirements

if you're running a small business I advise you submit your business details to major local online directories (yelp, yellow pages, Thomson directories ....) . You 'll be able to include your name, address and phone number along with your web address which will point to the home page of your site. It shouldn't be long before Google sees that your homepage is the most important page for your site.

Thanks guys, appreciate all your responses! My website is online and I didnt feel comfortable giving out my home address so I didn't do this. Google has now recognised my home page as you said Luc Durand! I don't think it seems to be bothering people to much that I don't have an address as my website has only been live for 12 days and I've had a few sales considering all the stock isn't up either yet and instegram has only been my real marketing point! So I feel happy about this!

Look at a virtual office - for 20 or 30 quid a month you get a city centre address, with mail forwarding to your home office. Add a VOIP number for another 10 quid a month and suddenly you look just as corporate as those paying thousands for city centre office locations.
