    Hi all,

So I have a staff member currently off with mental health issues. This employee has equipment and keys belonging to the business. How do I go about retrieving this and is there a time frame they need to be returned by? The keys are used on a regular basis so are needed for the company to continue to operate.

Call them and say you need the keys?

Would you be as hesitant if the employee had a broken leg ?

Thanks for reply and no I suppose not. She has gone from doing a shift to all of a sudden not wanting to talk/see me. I have very little experience in this field but do not want it to be claimed that I have added to her mental health by contacting her when she has expressed that she feels to anxious to talk/see me.

Contact her to say you need to collect the keys and ask for a suitable time for you to pop over to collect. Also offer her a "get out" asking if she'd prefer, has she got a friend that can drop the keys off to you?

There is no right or wrong answer to this really in terms of HR law. I would say, if there are operation reasons for needing the equipment during someone’s absence, you are free to contact them to organise how best to get it from them, regardless of any mental health issues. You just need to be care to be as sensitive as possible, especially if there is any link to stress or other problems at work.
