Hello all

I applied to streamline a while ago and on the phone told i had passed the credit check

After i signed the document they sent me through post. I got a letter saying i have not passed the credit check.

I told them this but they stand by their decision. So they have wasted my time to be blunt.

I am in need of a payment system which will build more trust. I get lots of basket adds and people proceed to the checkout. Those who are familiar with paypal end up paying by paypal and the same with google checkout.

We have had a number of calls recently saying that they like an item but i dont accept their card (which i do).

They are not aware of paypal etc and noticed a lot give up as its not exactly clear how to pay if your not an account holder.

What other payment solutions are there? I am reluctant to try sagepay incase as it is another search on my credit file and worried i will fail it.

Is there another way that makes it easier to pay?

I remember some years back signing up with WorldPay. It seemed to be going well until I got a lot of angry customers from the US telling me that they had filled everything in only to find that the transaction(s) never completed. It was some type of timeout problem. WorldPay said it worked fine (funnily enough). But, as I pointed out, they were testing it with their server in the next room, not several thousand miles away.

I lost a lot of credability from that and made good with the customers by giving free stuff away so they could see that I was trying to do the decent thing.

My advice is check out ANY online payment scheme with actual users if you can. Day to day business does not always match the brochure. Just because it's owned by a BIG name company, doesn't mean that it works.

Right now I'd lean towards Paypal.

From memory i dont think sagepay perform a credit check. We have four accounts with them, but they are quite old now so they may have changed things. You can always email their support. Their system is ok, but they do have some annoying generic error messages if a transaction fails that often dont explain why it failed.

just had a quick google and a company called eway seem quite reasonable. Never used them myself though

Sagepay and Eway are payment gateways - you will still need a merchant account to run alongside either and the merchant account will always perform a credit check.

Who do you have your business bank account with? It may be worth attempting to get a merchant account with them - at least you can talk to your business account manager who may be able to deal with any problems.

You should also consider looking into your credit file to make sure there is nothing nasty lurking that you do not know about.

Chances are Sagepay won't perform a credit check as they are a payment gateway like ourselves. We do not perform credit checks currently as we do not provide the Internet Merchant Account (IMA) - the acquiring bank does. It will be the acquiring bank (Streamline, Barclays, HSBC etc) that performs the credit checks and as such if they pass and get given the merchant ID/s we can be 99% certain they are safe to take on. That said, we do vet the applications before submitting them to the banks as they will have minimum criteria to meet.

I use sagepay and Im pretty sure they don't credit check.

You will need to apply for a Merchant account number from your bank so you would need a business account (I think).

Depending on your bank you may be charged a fee for this, I use HSBC and pay £20 per month to payment processing and then the sagepay fees but its worth it in my opinion, on top of that you also have processing fees from your bank.

Paypal is the fast easy option if you struggle and most people are not put off by it when purchasing on a website.

Hi ,We arrange merchant accounts for AIB MS that offer no MMSC for new to cards ,you just pay per transaction made.

If you are looking for a payment gateway ,take a look at Charity Clear a new "ethical" payment gateway (also cheaper than Sagepay)

I have wrote up over 500 outlets for Streamline and from experience they do have particular trade sectors that they class as restricted ,more than happy to give it a try with AIB MS for you.
