Google Instant is a drain on resource

Google has created a drain on resource for no real benefit to the end user.

The best way to explain is quite simple.

Old way
Load Google> type term> c.a.r. press return >search> result delivered

New way
Load Google > type term > c > search> result delivered>a> search> result delivered>r> search> result delivered

If you consider both processes and yes i know it is only small figures per search, but consider every search and everybody that searches and then every day. Add that all up and what do you get??

Some body some where is going to make a lot of money out of the bandwidth used.
Dongle users beware!!!!

I don't think they are true searches, probably caches orr..hmm.

Something did just occur to me. What if they treat ALL of those as searches?

Think what that's going to do to their search metrics!!

They've effectively quintupled their search volume overnight!!

That ~70% market share (in terms of search volume) will be more like 99%!

And we all scoffed when Yahoo treated their image slideshows as individual searches...

I think they didnt think about budget web users.

You use bing it cost you 1 meg
You use google it cost you 5 meg

Not real figures, but if it starts to cost you to search and its free somewhere else i believe that you will go elsewhere.

Good chink-in-the-armour for Bing marketing to exploit.

You gotta love a competitive free market :D

The searches may be perfomed server side, but the results still have to come down the line and use up bandwidth. I don't know how much extra bandwidth is used but there will be some (possibly a negligible amount).
It would be extremely negligible because I am sure Google will have it so it only needs to download some extra text and not images or anything (apart from for the weather).

Firtsly sanjiv play with it an you will see it changes with each key stroke (as they have admitted).
They say this is for slow typer ????? What? Are they kidding?:|
Also sanjiv the page is delivered to your browser. So i dont get your statement about the feed. It will use up your allocation of data if your on a dongle. I just tested and on normal 15 searches i used 2 mb whiles on instant.
Less that a meg on normal
I have a really bad feeling about this. The results are derived from the naturals as they normally stand but give many varied examples of the possible search query. Basically google are trying to second guess what you want to know.
Problems i can foresee

1) something flashes up and they click with out thinking = wasted click
2) less browsing
3) speed on slower connections.
will caiuse more problems for ppc because the suggested searches will then make a potential client skip or click on the alphabetical order of results

now i dont think it will be long before we start getting aaaa seo services LOL

I can only see it "helping" IT or subject illerate people. Try out any niche area and there's no data...as for killing SEO, how?

Agreed - The Guardian has been guilty of publishing some very lame articles of late but this has to be one of the worst yet?

Of late? It's virtually unreadable, they really need to get some fresh blood in.

Devon at the moment.
Ok this might be a fluke.... This morning my analytics shows a massive jump in traffic from yahoo and bing across all of the sites I follow. I concidered using these for normal searches yesterday because I hated the flashing mess being thrown in my face, until i realised I could switch it off.

Anyone else notice the same?

I don't get you Steve nearly every SEO on the planet can see the implications for both SEO and PPC.

It seems you're the only one on this thread who thinks that was a good article.

Anyway, if you think ithe implications are so clear, why don't you spell them out for us?

I mean, really go into the specifics and tell us what'll happen, not do your usual thing and dodge the question.

Well I've found two things so far to avoid using it:

    1) Using the firefox start page so http://www.google.co.uk/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official

    2) And not being signed into my Google account. Not sure if this is valid though but signing out did indeed stop the instant search.

On that second issue it does get on my tits a bit as when search for ecommerce software for instance and I'm signed in, my site is at No. 2. Signed out it's on the second page. I've never understood why this happens nor do I see any benefit.

No longer works, i'm signed out in Mozilla and still get it. They're rolling it out as the standard search, for everyone in several countries!

I absolutely hate this new feature, and do not see any benefit to the end user. For example, if i'm searching for Taxi in North London, why on earth would I need to know what the search results would be for Taxi and Taxi North? Crazy.

I actually haven't found anyone who likes this feature.

Personalised search. When signed in, Google knows from your history that you lurve your site and so positions it higher than others. When signed out, Google doesn't know you or your bias.

I read somewhere the feature would not work if they detected you were on a slow connection but people with download limits could potentially have problems.

My problem with the guardian article is that they failed to consider the fact that the more complex search engines become the more business are going to rely on the experts to show them what to do.

    In what sense?

Do you mean people who are doing a search on behalf of a business? How would that be different to people doing search for themselves?

Or are you talking about businesses doing SEO or PPC?

Google are losing it I reckon.

Just one of millions (I'm sure) of examples of the stupidty of instance search:

    'pool bet'

    - you end with the results for 'pool bethesda'

Thats information on swimming pools near near Washington or information on the 'Pool of Bethesda' that is mentioned in the Bible. Very useful and exactly not what I was looking for...

Google has lost it's mojo

personally speaking i have two issues.

    1) i like to browse
    2) I dont like someone shoving things in my face, because i start to read them..

Results shoot up and its because of the alphabetical list.
Google said the tested it (with sheep i assume)
If a result comes up i start to read it incase i am missing something. this will extend the time i am browsing not reduce it. Its a donkey in my opinion.

Will SEO be impacted? Specifically related to keywords. Will long tail keywords become less attractive (as they are unlikely to be predicted) and have fewer searches than the major ones. So would targetting the major keywords be most important? Will the big companies with large SEO budgets win over the small guys?

    [Hope this makes sense!]

Thanks for the response Ali. When I was typing, I wasn't getting updates with every keystroke. If your dongle stats show that, then it must use more traffic but it can be turned off. They should have a notice though.

I don't know if it is just me but I can't seem to be able to get instant searches anymore??? Am I the only one?
