Google Analytics

Hi everyone,

I recently added Google Analytics to my website and am now scratching my head trying to work out what the reports are telling me!

Since I added the coding, about 1 week, I've had an average of 450 visitors per day and an average bounce rate of 63%.

What is a bounce? I'm thinking it's on one of the following lines:-

  • an exit from the site
  • a page that doesn't load
  • a link that doesn't go anywhere
Thank you

    Hello,

Mpg is correct. It's the percentage of people that left after the first page they landed on, in other words they didn't view another page. The bounce rate of your site will depend greatly on your niche and target market. I believe anything under 60% is a fairly good bounce rate but to be honest I wouldn't pay too much attention to it.

    Regards,
    Jack

It is when someone finds your page on google and then goes back to the google results - which indicates they didn't find what they were looking for.

63% isn't abnormally high but gives you something to work on.

Google Analytics made a lot more sense to me when I built a few custom reports.

I particularly like one I created which shows Unique Visitors by Source (Medium) and then by Keyword.

To build a report use custom reports, build and then drag your required Metrics (Blue coloured, eg Unique Visitors, Bounce Rate etc) from the list on the left to your report build on the right hand side. Then do the same for Dimensions (Green Coloured, eg Source/Medium 1st, then Keywords 2nd, then City 3rd).

This report allows me to look at where visitors are coming from (Source/Medium) ie. Google CPC or Google Organic or Direct and I can click on say Google CPC and see which keywords where entered by each visitor before they clicked our Google Ad through to our site. Then if you click on the keyword you can see where that visitor came from eg. London, Birmingham, Paris etc.

Hope this helps - oh and you have to be careful with City - I show up as Huddersfield although I am near York but it is an indication of region at least !

I can see our unique visitors for Google Organic is increasing as our ranking in the results improves for key searches. I have switched off Google Adwords (CPC) for certain phrases as we come out high in the natural search results (organic). The above custom report has helped me work on this.

    What does Bounce Rate mean?

Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page. Use this metric to measure visit quality - a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance pages aren't relevant to your visitors. The more compelling your landing pages, the more visitors will stay on your site and convert. You can minimize bounce rates by tailoring landing pages to each keyword and ad that you run. Landing pages should provide the information and services that were promised in the ad copy.

    HI...

Google Analytics (GA) is a free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. Its main highlight is that the product is aimed at marketers as opposed to webmasters and technologists from which the industry of web analytics originally grew. The meaning of Bounce rate is a term used in Web site traffic analysis. It essentially represents the percentage of initial visitors to a site who "bounce" away to a different site, rather than continue on to other pages within the same site.
The formula used to calculate bounce rate is:
Bounce Rate = Total Number of Visits Viewing Only One Page / Total Number of Visits
