That's basically what my lad has got (1660 Super though)

It is fine for all the gaming he does Cyberpunk 2077 runs fine on it
You want a good power supply and good fans though

He says it is worst possible time for buying graphics cards though, prices are sky high at the moment because of crypto miners

My lad says to search for price/performance

He say's you don't really need to spend that much, something like an MSI B450 is a good buy.

Thanks I did a look - I did a quick check and it seemed to imply the msi b450 was no longer in production but that'll give me a good idea of where to start etc cheers

Are you planning to buy the specs listed or is that something you have already.

An Nvidia 1660 is well outdated was okish 2 years ago but in todays market completely underpowered. If he plans to game in 720p it will be fine but once you go to 2k or 1080 high details this one is not capable of handling that i demanding games.

130 fps for what if you don't have a 120hz monitor this number is pretty much worthless and stupide benchmark.

Get at least the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

I have to disagree with Nico, A GTX1660 is still a great value mid range card if your just gaming at 1080P (144hz) and can still handle high settings on it.

Watching my lad playing Overwatch with his GTX1660 super
He generally uses 1080 and his FPS can be well over 200

Other games, he says 80 FPS is plenty good enough

    With newer game (Cyberpunk)
He sets most settings to medium
He says 1080 is plenty good enough and FPS is generally around 80, rarely dropping below 60

All Double Dutch to me, I just start a game and play it, he'll spend 10 minutes getting the settings right 1st

If you're a 1080p gamer and already have GTX 1060, yes it is still a decent GPU Card in the year 2021 . But if you're going to purchase a new GPU card there are better cards like 1660 or 2060
It makes no sense to buy a almost 5 year old gpu in 2021.

Think you might have gotten a bit confused, I mean everyone does with PC part naming schemes :D but I and the other post was on about a 1660, not a 1060

Jope got a bit mixed up with the nvidia marketing but point would be the same a 1660 is okish if you had one already but with the rtx 3060 ti coming shortly it would make no sense to buy anything that starts with 1

It's like my lad says you should search for price/performance - bang for buck

It's easy to just keep upping your budget slightly when you see a newer series/model and you can end up paying far more than you wanted.

I would rather buy the best 18 month old series than a cheaper brand new series.

I think if I was buying one now (I wouldn't because prices are so skewed) I would still get the 1660, ask me in 3 months time and I might not though.

Scary thing is, I just checked price of the 1660 and it costs more now than it did when I bought it about 10 months ago

Oh yes - the price of graphic cards is stupid money at the moment (lockdown plus supply issues).
Anyone have any thoughts on the 1660S (super) runs GDDR6 where as the plain 1660 runs gddr5. For an extra £20 it seems like it's worth it. Was going to go for a MSI B450 with Ryzen 5 (3.6)
Now my son has chipped saying the 1660S will cause the board to bottle neck as it will be too fast for the MB / processor - I think he's very mistaken - and the 1660S plus ryzen 5 cpu on the b450 MB will be fine.

He only plays fortnite and some times black ops!!!
    Thoughts ?

My lad says it will be fine, motherboard is the least important thing, but that one is plenty good enough.

Power supply and fans are more important (absolute minimum 450W)

He has the 1660 Super and when it's really set up well can play at 4K and still get 70 FPS
Most thinks he pays at 1440 or 1080 though
