Free listing in Yellow Pages-anyone?

A free basic listing is free, not £80. You get one line - business name, adress, tel no. That's it. Just like in the ordinary phone book.

If they're trying to sell yiu anything, it's the cheapest display ad - which is a 2cm box with 5 lines of copy.

It's only worth paying if you're the kind of business people need to look up - like solicitor, plumber, car repairs etc.

If you're a web-based business, your money would be spent elsewhere.

I had a basic listing last year - it brought me no business at all, so I'm not renewing, only keeping my free one-liner.

I've had two clients in nearly three years from my free Yellow Pages listing - both were local individuals who did not have internet access. Having said that, I would never consider paying to advertise in there.

Thanks!
I won't be paying for a listing, that is for sure, esp as we are online only anyway.
I might get the free listing though, not for the Yellow Pages but more for an entry in Yell.com as well.

Thanks again,
S xx

The term 'horses for courses' comes to mind.

I would not be out of it! My first year in was a free listing, and through Yell.com I gained 2 jobs with a value exceeding £12,000, which is a lot of fence!!

Totally agree with above though, that it is more a 'product reference tool' than a 'service' one.

I have a free listing and I wish I'd never done it. Firstly they didn't have a section to put me in and now I get confused with estate agents and the amount of junk phone calls I get is unbelievable. I know they are all from Yell and Thompson local as I've asked the sales people who ring me. Apparently they Yell etc sell details to companies who want them.

Yell.com works for me, get 5-10 calls per month, but I offer a service and work in IT.

This will be the 1st year I have tried the actuall paper directories, have spent over 4k on yell, thomson and bt phonebook.

It better bloody work...

YP doesnt work period.

Simply not true.

Late last year, I met 3 local accountants.

Before meeting each of them, I looked at their ads in the YP and concluded that:

Ad 1 wasn't producing results.

Ad 2 might be paying for itself, might not.

Ad 3 was the best and was probably turning a profit.

On meeting with a/c's, I learned that:

Ads 1 & 2 weren't producing responses, but ad 3 was a real money spinner, returning a solid profit.

(BTW, the ads were all about the same size)

Of course, two of the accountants told me why the YP is a waste of time. What's the saying about poor workmen blaming their tools?

Saying "the yellow pages doesn't work" is like saying direct mail doesn't work because you sent out some letters and got no response or that websites don't make money because yours doesn't bring in any business.

The simple truth is that there are a hell of a lot of businesses, in a hell of a lot of different industries, making very good profits from their yellow pages ads.

So, it's a very useful marketing tool.

However, it has to be used properly.

That means:

(1) you only use it if it's right for your business
(2) you have a good ad

The second one is the key.

Most YP ads look like they were slapped together in 5 minutes based on someone's business card. There's no selling point, no offer, and no understanding of how the YP differs from other forms of advertising.

And, as a result, no business generated by the ad ....
