    Hi all,

    I guess like most people in business - I feel that free advertising is always more preferable to advertising which costs money!

    Does anyone have tips or recommendations where I can generate business from (for free). I appreciate that there may be a time investment required

    Am very much an Internet Novice!

    Add a signature to your profile. It's free and if you write it well could be an advert. Then.. join in the buzz of the forum and make useful posts. People will see your sig and might be tempted to look you up a bit more.

    Hi Hannah - good idea (god I'm dim) - is this just a case of ploughing through loads of directories (am I being stupid??) or is there an easy way of finding a list of them (again - is that a stupid question?) cheers si

    Try Traders Review and Free Index. You can have a free listing also with Touch Local, Yell.com and Thomson Local. Vivastreet is another one.
    Search for what your business does (I do language tuition. so searched for that) and this will bring up directories specific to your business (maybe!). It certainly worked for me. I only advertise on free listings, and am now about 5th down on google for language tuition in my area.

    Also, type in a search on google and see where your competitors have advertised for free, larger sites such as vivastreet, sunlocal etc are good, and for a small outlay an ebay advert/auction seems to normally appear on page 1 of google within a couple of hours of being placed.

    I hate thoose "free" directories and advertising sites, where you spend half an hour to register and in the last step they want you to pay 5-10-20 GBP, because the category you have chosen is not free... We should create a topic for the free sites which are not free... A black-list :)
    So guys, please use 'free' when it is really free!!
    Can I have the E letter for FREE on the internetalphabet??

    There is a simple registration form and the first people to register will be able to add their logo and link to the hompage for free. You can have the letter E for free until someone comes in and offers me a better price for it yes! Thats the deal.

    I went through your site. It seems to be a pseudo copy cat of the "1 Million Pixel" idea. Unfortunately as with all gimmicks the first in tends to be the winner. So as an advertiser I am very skeptical about this concept. I know it sounds harsh but there would be no value to you with a simple pat on the back and "Jolly well done you!!!!!"

    Here is my criticism..

    1. Graphics are poorly done. Immediate impression is what a Frontpage job and low and behold when I checked the source I see
    name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0"

     If I am going to pay for a advertising I will only buy space in appropriate spots that conform to our internal advertising standards. I suggest you get someone with some design skills to redo your art work and presentation.

    2. 100% empty slots -     What you should have done prior to launch is approached companies from a variety of industrys and offered to give them a spot for free, do their logo for them and explain your model. This way when you did your press release some publisher may have taken an interest.

    3. You have not bothered to properly advertise the page correctly by getting it search engine ready. So maybe I hear about the concept and I try and find it in google or some other search engine I will not find it. As an advertiser what is the point of payign for a spot that no one can find unless they know the exact URL.

    4. Blogs & Updates - Way to personal. My immediate thoughts were "Am i supporting a personal quest here by buying a spot?". If your going to blog about success you catch phrases like "Traffic Rocketed on launch" or "We saw a 250 fold increase on the previous days traffic. Its all accurate and would make me think... yeah maybe there is something here.

    I do applaud your enthusiasm but I think you have not fully understood what it is you are trying to do and it has shown in the implementation. My advise is to take it down, re-do it completely and launch again.

    What was wrong with the million pixel idea?
    Do you remember when it first launched and Alex was putting little squares on by hand?
    Everyone has to start - even if it's at the bottom.

    I quite like the idea (I am prone to liking zany ideas) the proof of the pudding is in the marketing.

    thanks for you comments. The idea is similar to the million dollar homepage but I think the auction spin creates a more exciting dynamic. Since companies will be losing out on advertising as soon as they are outbid, they have the incentive to immediately re-bid thus pushing up the price all the time. With the million dollar idea, the website was limited to the million pixels available.

    I will be updating the site but please remember I only launched it two days ago and its a work in progress

    Absolutely nothing. It was marketing genius and at that time unique. That is why it generated so much interest - no one had done it before. I am not saying non mainstream ideas like this are bound to fail, I am simply saying that in order to work there needs to be impetus to fuel interest. If not it is dead in the water.
