Free/Cheap bookkeeping spreadsheet/app for startup Self Employed?

Hi all,

I'm currently in the process of winding down my LTD company (long story, I decided to move away from that are of business as I simply don't enjoy it). I've registered as self employed as I plan on doing freelance web development and iPhone/Android app development.

Really what I'm after is some kind of spreadsheet template or something that I can use for bookkeeping. I'm not really wanting to spend a lot of money on things like quickbooks, sage, etc as I really cant see the benefit if (from what I gather) as a self employed person you only need to keep basic records of profit/expenses.

What are others using? Any recommendations?

Thanks for your time :)

For a free option VT cashbook - its super to record in's and out's and is quick and easy to learn. Lots of our clients use it and love it:)

For a full accounting package Accounts Portal - just £5 per month plus VAT for our clients.
