editing php

I use notepad++ for everything a simple light text editor with syntax high lighting is all you need.

I tend to stay away for web applications that do the work for you because you have less control over your code.

I second Zend. It displays tooltip suggestions to auto-complete built-in PHP functions, and also any variables or functions you've created that you currently have scope to. No double-checking PHP.net for common function names or wandering if you have access to a particular function etc.

The best free alternative is PHPEclipse, but it's not the easiest IDE to setup!

For now, use Notepad++ for writing bits of PHP, and graduate onto PHPEclipse when you're confident enough to write a fully fledged site.
