Back in May i signed up for thebestof, and a direct debit was due to start in June for the monthly payment.

Last week i recieved a letter from the company who sets their direct debits up, without any explanation, saying the direct debit would start a few days after the letter, and was for 4 times the agreed amount!

On further digging it seems that either thebestof, or the direct debit company, forgot to set the direct debit up when it should have been done, and they were therefore asking for the last 4 payments in one lump sum.

Now in my eyes, this has nothing to do with me and i should not be penalised. I feel the DD should be setup and start from now - the fact that it wasnt done was not my doing and i'm reluctant to pay such a large sum due to someone elses mistake.

Where do i stand with this?

Many thanks, Mark

Well really you would have had that payment in your account each month for the dd anyway right? So the money is all in your account in theory. So you're not being penalized in any way, they're just collecting outstanding payments - although it is stupid that they messed up on the dd and they should have discussed it with you. You could call and ask to settle the outstanding sum over several payments instead of all at once, explaining that it was their mistake.

Had a similar problem with Yellow pages last year.
Got a phone call demanding immediate payment of the outstanding amount. They eventually agreed to split the remaining amount over the remaining "X" number of months.

Can't say I was very happy either as it was their fault that they had not collected the DD..... yes I know I was due them the money etc. but I think it was their rather agressive attitude that got my back up.

Anyway ... don't need to worry about them now as I have pulled the pin on YP , Yell.com etc etc.

Someone makes a mistake, we all do from time to time, you see it as an opportunity to not to pay up.

You got the money in the bank, you wouldn't like it done to you, pay up.

From an agreeing - but slightly different slant - if you've allowed for the payment (as in have the money in the bank, as previously suggested), and have had the benefit of whatever you will end up paying for since the start...

Why shouldn't they want - and reasonably expect - the money now?

All the company needs to do is to give you 10 days notice of the amount to be taken.

They can vary the figure when they like that is the disadvantage of DD's over SO's for you.

I agree you have had the service and owe the money, you should be grateful that they gave you interest free credit for that 3 month period!
