Chartered Accountant

Hi Everyone;
I wanted to post this question, because I think I will get the best answer here. Im currently in year 10 and have a strong passion in becoming a chartered accountant, because of many reasons i.e. one is that I am interested in business alot. I just wanted to ask how would I become an Chatered accountant?

*What subject GCSE's would I need with what grade?
*What A-Level subjects would I need?
*What cours in Uni would I need?
*Where can I go to have work experience at the age of 14 in Birmingham to develop an understanding in basic accountancy?

You don't need any specific GCSE's or A-Level's for Accountancy.

To become Chartered, you can do an ACCA, ICAEW etc. These are institutions that accredit you as a Chartered Accountant. They all have slightly varying entry routes and I think they all differ slightly in other ways too. Usually doing an Accountacy degree is like a fast track to become accredited and several years work experience usually helps too.

Have a look at this:

I went on that course. Didn't find it that useful for me but there are 3 institutions there who you can go and talk to. The talks the university say are pointless however it can be a good day out if you meet new people there and maybe go out after in the evening.

Any GCSE's are fine but you would need to make sure they are accepted by your college. I would say aim for at least B English and A Maths though to be eligible for training schemes.

Generally any are fine though Maths, Physics, Economics are generally well regarded - aim for BBB/ABB.

Again any course is accepted in Uni - though something like Accounting, Maths, Economics is much better to have then Media Studies. Some people do History, English, Law and then go onto join accountancy firms.

You don't need a degree necessarily you can leave college and do AAT/CAT and then go onto ACCA/ACA/CIMA/CIPFA etc.

ACA = chartered accountant
ACCA = certified chartered accountant
CIMA = chartered management accountant
CIPFA = chartered public accountant

ACA usually in accounting firms
ACCA/CIMA usually in finance departments
CIPFA public sector

if you do go to uni after you leave you can join a graduate scheme to do one of these they pay for study and give study leave

As for work experience try writing to some local firms - check in yellow pages

You might also want to look at joining a firm straight after completing A levels and starting the ACCA/ACA route straight away, as many smaller firms do not take on graduates. It will depend what your long term ambitions are....

Hi

First of all I really do wish you every sucess in your chosen career.

You have so many options on how to train and what qualifications to train for.

One option is to find an employer when you leave school, as Dave has suggested, and train with them whilst working, starting with the AAT and progressing to one of the Chartered qualifications.

Have a look at these links for some information -

Once again I really do wish you good luck:)
