Hello,

Has anyone of you ever bought clothes wholesale from Dubai, China or India to sell in the UK?

I was thinking of booking a flight to Dubai, filling my luggage with clothes bought wholesale to resell on Ebay. Is it worth it?

I've heard of people doing the same from India and earning a living from it.

Has anyone ever tried this and is it worth it?

Thanks,

Zarah

No, nothing branded at all.

It will be more sort of ladies wear - like dresses, blouses etc.

Do I still have to pay Duty? I just assumed that since it was my personal belonging in my luggage I would not have to pay. We are talking about 20-30kg.

Hi Zarah,

Why book a flight and go to the expence of flying abroad to buy clothes to sell on again. I am originally from the UK but now live in China - Shanghai. You can find bad manufacturers here, just like you can in the UK or any where else you want to go. Have a good look at suppliers on the net in China and if you see one that takes your fancy, give me a shout and I will make a phone call and check them out for you. I deal with quite a few factories in different parts of China and I would do this as a favour for you. I would like to see Chinese business' trusted more because unfortunately, they are not trusted too much, especially in the UK.

BTW you need to get more grip of the UK market.
Signal Jammers are not illegal as they are currently selling on many UK reputable website. Also which part of the business details you have fail to understand!!!!;)

Signal Jammers ARE illegal in the UK, just because other's sell them does not make them legal. Why do you think they are not in universal use, such as at cinemas, restaurants, theatres etc? Simply because interefring with teelcoms is illegal, and if say someone was to die because an ambulance could not be summoned due to such a device in use, the user could be held laible.

What part of your business details do I fail to understand?

Errrr, all of them, where are they on your site? I was under the impression it was a legal requirement to display such details as address, contact numbers etc, all I can see from your site is a blank email inquiry form.

If they are on your site they are hard to see, and since you hide your info from a whois search it tends to suggest you might want it that way.

There are no legal requirements on websites. just the demands of savy customers and merchant service companies.

There are thousands of website without their address and just enquiry form. Hence why they call e-commerce website and they are cheap as there is no physical interaction and everything including CS done via web. everybody has their own way of looking things anyways it does not matter;)

In 2007, Companies House made an amendment to the Companies Act 1985 that means that certain information must be published on all stationary of UK registered companies. Your website and any other electronic communications such as emails, which are used as paper equivalents, are counted as stationary.

The information required by the law is:
  • Company name
  • Place of registration
  • Registered number
  • Registered office address
  • Notification of intention to wind the business up (if applicable)
At Imaginet we normally include this information in the 'Terms and Conditions' section of a website, but you could also include it as part of the 'About Us' section or with your company's contact details. Further information can be found on the Companies House website at http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/promotional/busStationery.shtml

http://itwales.com/Website_legal_requirements_997364.htm

If you are a sole trader and not registered with companies house you still need to have your full postal address details on your site co comply with current legislation.

We used to operate on eBay. We built up a solid feedback rating of over 25,000 feedback selling imported radio controlled toys and gadgets from both China and the Far East. Yes we were pushing decent numbers in terms of sales but be warned that you'll have to research and re-read the TOS very thoroughly.

Unlike what it was 3-4 years back it's not the flexible, open marketplace it used to be. In fact there are a lot of products which might be legal in the UK (not referring to signal jammers here) but illegal on eBay. We left eBay after a few of our products became illegal on eBay but were still legal in the UK. That fustrated us so we ended up selling the rest of our business.

So do your research very thoroughly before getting involved. Oh and working out of a suitcase with repeat trips to Dubai or any other country won't work long term. As people have said you'll still have to declare them at customs , hence paying import duties and on top of that it's just not feasible running a well oiled operation like that.

Look into travelling there, and finding some decent suppliers. Then get some legal help and advise with regards to importing a container or part container into the UK. Figure out all of your costs ahead of time, including eBay fees, duties, shipping costs etc. Then make an informed decision.

Like I said eBay's great for selling junk and personal belongings, not as easy to get started if you want to run a fully fledged business.

good luck :) and if you need any more help PM me, I'm quite well experienced in this area.

Greetings Zarah

you need to know your market before you can start suppliying goods. do you have any enquiries. have made sales with items of similar nature. is this a out of blue thought??? I kno a woman who is selling online tops which are manufactured in the east however her products are unique to a certain extent.

agree with above

ebay cannot be your only way of selling and its not easy trying to sell stuff on ebay when they are people who will work of 20 p profits

of course, but there is a question that the design of the clothes is good for UK? as i known a lot of factories in China and India can make cheap clothes, but the most important point is the design. i worked in a factory once, thier designers are always out-fashioned.:(

Heck it hardly seems worth all the hard work for a 20p profit..they must have to move some stuff to make money at that crazy price.
