If you mean bookkeeping then software of some sort, unless you want to use a quill pen and a leather-bound ledger.

But as OWG says sales volume does matter. A business that issues 3 high-value invoices per year is going to be very different to one that has several hundred low value transactions per day.

If you have 1 customer and invoice once a month, then your entire sales history for the year will sit on a sigle side of A4, so a simple spreadsheet will suffice.

If on the other hand you make 30 sales per day, then your requirements will be completely different.

If you don't want to buy software then I recommend Open Office. Open office provides free spreadsheet software.
